Changing MIDI note out

Hello all,

First post here, so please be gentle. I picked up a SP-606 from a pawn shop in Reno, NV last weekend. I have it connected to my PC via USB. I intend to use it primarily as a MIDI controller, although I may get into sample editing on it later.

My problem is this:

The software I've tried (Fxpansion Guru and Ableton Live) all start their drum kits at note C1. When I hit PAD1 on my SP-606, it sends B0. And so on up the line: each pad is shifted down one note, so I can't play the 4x4 grid properly. I hope that description makes sense.

I emailed Roland support and they just copied p.79 out of the manual and sent it to me. I'm not dumb, but I cannot understand this manual.

I suspect this is a very simple setting that I'm just too clueless and newbish to be able to find. Can someone help?

They (Roland) could just tell you a simple answer....
You can't change that(unfortunately)...
.the only thing you can change is in the midi menu of the sp606, look for type1-type2....this will change the behaviour of the transmitted notes according to which padbank you are using...in simple words
type2:padbanks 1-4 change the octave range,
type1 the notes are the same(fixed) regardless which padbank you are using...

don't bother for the pad base channel setting,it's only useful when you won't to control sp with a midikeybord or other midipads...

Try changing some settings on ableton

edit: are you sure it stars on B0 and and not on B1?

So it can't be changed... that's lame.

I just checked... it's definitely B0, MIDI note 35, for Pad 1.

I had already found and fiddled with the octave changes, but I still end up one note lower than the preset.

Ableton has some pretty sophisticated MIDI mapping and so forth, I haven't dug into those yet. Likewise, Guru and Battery will learn MIDI notes and assign them to sounds. But I was really hoping this was an easy setting change on the SP-606.

Grumble.

But thanks for the info. I'll keep working on it.

Edit: according to the manual (yeah right), it sends B1. But Ableton blinks B0 in a drum kit display.

Hey, I solved it! At least in Ableton Live, anyway...

All I did was create a MIDI Effect device to shift the pitch +1 semitone. I saved it as "SP606 Remap" and it works with all the drum kits.

Say yay! Yay!
