Hi peeps, been hovering over this forum reading posts the last week or so and it seems like a real good community so thought I would join up :D

I just got my sp - 404 in the post today :P couldn't be more excited, the machine is a thing of beauty, I've got 4 months off university and I can'twait to get stuck into this machine.

Anyway to the point of this post, Im running a Numark TT usb Turn Table into the sp, but it's playing at a really low volume and is no where near peaking, does this mean I need a mixer to pick the volume up?

If so could anyone recommend me a cheap mixer, doesn't need to be to flashy, just do a decent job, and not fall apart.

Thanks for any help.

You might need a mixer to boost the signal. You could try and run the signal through the usb into you computer and boost the signal with something like Reaper or Audacity(both free programs). You could also run the signal through a stereo amplifier if you have one for your home stereo. If that doesn't work you should look into buying a small cheap mixer online.

a stereo amp would be your best bet, you can find one cheap, unless of course you prefer a turntable mixer. some old boom boxes work good for turntables and they have the best sound.

not sure how that proggy works, I use cool edit 2000 to record and after recording I can boost the whole sample by using "Amplify"...there I can boost 3,6,10 or whatever db.....that works with all recording programs don´t it?

Oh and btw...wellcome to the club :D

I haven't used Audacity in a while but I pretty sure you can select the whole track and then apply amplify from the included fx.

this may be obvious, but have you tried adjusting the level of recording input, into the 404? you do that via the third knob, and you should be able to get most devices up to the point where that wee red light flashes on and off with peaks.

what i'm getting at is: the input level may be the stock one and you can boost that. boosting it may give you enough signal to hear yr sounds.

read up in the manual for that input volume adjust. peace.

That's a good point Fauna, the internal processing level can be boosted on the 404 unlike the 303. :( But most turntables need to be boosted to line level, that's why really like my vestax handy trax it boosts the record signal to line level out of the player.

I would think so too if you're sending the signal through usb, but maybe not through the RCA cables it has.
