price limits and digging values

do you guys have a cap that you won't cross when picking up used wax? I have a real hard time paying over $10 and generally don't like to pay more than $1 especially when most things can be found for a under $5 if your patient, but that could take years...

the most I've spent on a used record is $12 for a minty copy of songs by the rotary connection, but that's still about 1/2 what the market value would be in a bigger city...

you guys have any other rules that you abide by, like no re-issues etc? or you won't sample stuff that has already been pilfered?

call me nuts but i like 10 to 20 dollar ranges maybe even 25. BUT! thats on shyt like john coltrane not rick "stoned" james (rip).

yet thats me being a collector or trying to be a crate digger and collector.

some things like that i can take to my pops and talk about and listen to w/o fear of scratches cuz they're generally clean.

However i do get down w/ the 1 bin, and anything above till that ten bucks mark.
if i buy a 20 dllar record i lls get enough records to hit 28 and then i cut myself off.... yes im strange

i go for the dollar bins, but cause my diggin spots are fairly legit, i usually dig through the regular crates in the jazz section too, and get anything from 3 to 12 dollars usually, end up droppin like 70-100 a visit, plus at one of my places you get 20 dollars free for every 100 you spend, so i go through those cards like every paycheck, i have copped a 30 dollar record before, but it was half price all vinyl so it was only 15, i think thats the most i've dropped

I paid $35 for Nick Drake's Family Tree. Think that's the most I've dropped for a single record.

I paid $30 for Pink Floyd's Saucerful of Secrets...

I don't think that's the pressing I got, but I know it's a mono version... I'm gonna check for that misspelling when I get home!


Usually I stack up like 75-100 bucks worth mixed between some classics < $5 and some current hip hop titles with acapellas on em for like $7. I don't get to go diggin that often tho.

i don't "collect" on vinyl anymore cuz i've moved so many times and grew tired of having to haul it all around. vinyl's expensive to move properly, you know?

but i still dig for stuff to sample from. i totally stay in the bargain bins.

i usually decide before going out what my limit is. its usually $20 total, including tax.

however, sometimes after digging and standing at the listening stations for awhile and getting grimy and shitty, i'll decide that this $20 must ALSO include the cost of a pint.

i then go get a pint, and drink it while checking the sleeves on the stuff i just dug up. that's a very satisfying pint.

i usually get a dozen or so slabs, sometimes a few less tho.

Copy your choice cuts to digital with a usb turntable and sell 'em back to a store when your finished or keep like ten of the best and give away all your $1 vinyl when you move. Never stop digging and collecting, FLAC is just as good to sample from as wax so convert and stay light if you have to. The most I've paid for a record is $25 for an original pressing of Miles Davis "Bitches Brew", I had to have that wax and classic sleeve art.

there arent too many record shops around my way anymore, at least im not aware of. All the good spots shut down. I agree with Oakland. Copy your stuff to a "lossless" format, like FLAC or apple lossless, or whatever. whatever was on the vinyl will be on the digital file, bit for, err, sound. Then I bump my ipod around with different songs and my 404 w/ the batteries and anywhere inspiration hits I am doin it.

ive been using my sampler to convert vinyl to digital. just some stuff for my mom though or something i really wanna jam outside my room. besides that i dont cuz its kinda a pain in the ass.

I usually go to the 50 cents to $1 sections. If a records really worth it or I've been looking for it forever I'll pay up to $20 for it, but rarely buy anything over $4.

I've generally little hesitation paying up to $15 on records I'm actually going to listen to a lot ($25 if they're a rarity, such as a copy of Dream Less Sweet I got yesterday ) (after all I'd pay more for it new with a crappy CD cover, and I might not find it again for ages) but if I'm buying it because it looks like a decent sampler I won't go over $3-4.

But most of the 2nd hand stores hear dont have anything decent, so I'll just go grab handfuls of the ones I've never heard of for 50c/$1

I Don't have any record stores where I live. I do have a few good secondhand stores hear. When I am at a record store I usually stick to about $5 a record unless i find one that i just need. about 2 or 3 in the 10-20 bucks range & a lot of records under 5.

But I have a few records on my list that I'll be willing to pay into the hundreds.

i usually go in missions for sample shit and in that case i dont really like to pay over 5 but it still happens. mostly in the dollar jazz shelf getting silly. or the dollar new age for the solo instrument records. i found a suite for kurzweil sampler and synclavier in that bin it was 1 dollar. and it is insane.

like if i knew how live the record above was i would have paid 10-15 for it
