Hey guys im Young Heat im new to the forums but I dont have an Sp im getting one but I would like to get questions (about 10) answered before I buy one.

Question 1 would be the Click in like when u are about to record how can u set it to count only four instead of 8 because in a vid I seen on rolands site it counts 8 insteadof four and i know that would get tiring after awhile?

2: How can I turn off the feature where u dont have to press the f button to physically record how can I make it to where once I press record it will start my count in?

3: If I bought a usb floppy drive or zip drive would I beable to load sounds and save my beats onto a zip or a foppy if I had it hooked up thru usb on the sp?

4:how is the chopper because I like sampling off vinyl its my passion but I hear bad things about it how good is it really?

5:How is the sound overall does it sound digital or is it pretty warm?

6:what about 16 levels like an mpc like having one note playing different pitches like a keyboard?

7:metrenome sound canu change it even tho it dosent matter jus thought it was a feature?

8:how slow or fast is the loading time if u use the compact flash card cause I know u can save on the flash and record on the flash to?

That it for now I'll add more as a reply wen more come to mind but I really need a reply guys I know u guys can help...Especially 606man Thanx guys Really Appreciate it!

OK. here we go:

1 - You can change the count in.
2 - Not sure if I understand what you mean here, but you can start sampling in a number of different ways, including 'arming' the sampler so that when you start playing it will start sampling.
3 - No need for ancient floppies or zips; you can save your sounds on hard-disk and load them via usb.
4 - The chopper is fine 9 times out of 10 - for that 1 time it doesn't behave you will have to chop that sample elsewhere. It is an 'autochop' though so you don't actually have much say in how it does it. In practice I find it very useful though...
5 - The sound is FAT. It can sound digital or warm (up to you, really) You can blow speakers with this thing very easily!
6 - No '16 levels'. There's ways around it though. See the 'multisamples' thread. In my experience 16 levels only works on a very few samples anyway (usually it just makes stuff out of tune!), so there's not much point to it.
7 - I haven't ever used any metronome, so I dunno. Much better to have a simple hi-hat pattern to play along to.
8 - Depends. Saving samples can be lengthy (especially if they're huge samples that go for minutes). Once they are on the card though the SP treats them as if they were in RAM - so loading times in everyday use are more or less instant.
9 - Cheack the threads here too, especially the ones on the chopper and multisamples; there's plenty more info.

Yea I was tryna say change it from having to press the f button when u want to record a pattern...not a sample and I rarely ever use more than 12 seconds of sample time anyways soo that why I asked about the usb floppy and floppys are less expensive...?

oh ok. You just hit the record button to record a pattern - there are at least three different methods though so you'll have to figure out which one works for you.

This is the deepest of the SPs - there is always more than one way to do things and that puts a lot of people off initially...

(on the storage issue) So long as you have a computer you wont need disks. To get the most out of the 606 you need to be unafraid of using it with the computer - If you hate computers look at the 555 or 505 instead, or even a 404 or 303 (or even a 202 - they're all good in their own way!).

Oh I see

You can use any storage system you like, but only through the computer. You can't hook a usb hard disk directly to the 606. What you CAN do, however, is use Compact Flash cards just like floppies, directly in the machine. My friend does this as he doesn't like using the computer much.

Hope that helps..?

Roland designed the 606 to be tightly integrated with your computer. I've said it before and I'll say it again - if you don't like computers don't get a 606 - get a 404 instead.

Through the comp it's no problem at all - that's exactly what I do..

Part of the reason why I think the SP-606 is so forward-thinking is the fact that you get the 'best of both worlds' setup.... ie you can use the hardware to sequence, create swinging grooves, process sound, add effects and play live, while the software side gives you access to all the cool things that computers excell at, such as VST effects, powerful sequencing, automation etc.

People always go on about what the 'pros' do; it's a fact that a modern professional studio has a combination of hardware AND software. The 606 gives the home-user a taste of this kind of production environment - very cool indeed 8)

ok cool! Cause I was thinkin since Im really wanting to use the floppys im telling u man I cant get away from em I've been using em for soo long its jus preference...but I was thinkin if I make a beat on the 606 and then save the beat onto the computer onto a floppy I would still be using em so i dont lose anything and everytime I wanna load a beat I would jus put in the floppy and load?
