madlib is lazy

short n sweet. I sometimes get into a madlib tune and then bang it's gone, but it keeps it fresh everytime you hear it. Take J Dilla's Donuts for example, some tunes are barely 30 seconds long, but still raw.

short songs with substance are the cocaine of music - you listen to it - get hooked - and keep bumping up the volume after each and every listen.

If a song has substance - the length doesn't matter, period.

I think that Madlib isn't everyone's cup of tea and while I don't like everything that he puts out,the guy is a genius pure and simple!!
But I totally understand if someone doesn't feel his ish,it's all good.
I prefer raw,short and simple unpolished beats,there's just some humanity in Madlib's sound,it's like he's in his own zone.
Remember that the classic hiphop beat is a variation of a 2 or 4 bar loop

ill try and put the nail in the coffin here.

this is not the first time i heard him i heard him 4 years ago under quasimoto on epitonic.com for the track "come on feet work for me" thats still my only favorite song by him.
talented, he is. i like his approach to working with emcees, "heres a shitload of beats choose one"

but i think the 1-2 min songs are a testament of only using samplers and 8 tracks while smoking weed . once you make a good track on one of those you never want to go back and edit it because you spent so much time on it already.

yes it is part of the magic but it is also part of the problem. limitations set you free but can also hold you back.

I think the whole point of making music with samples is improvising(this includes turntablism). Sure, most people who don't know what a sampler is can't tell how creative a producer really is.
But you can't call a person lazy for not making a beat long enough for the people who want it that way.

I'm pretty sure the original Madvill tracks were all made this way, and they're all "full length". I think being weeded makes tracks longer... not shorter. It's easier to vibe out on a theme, and consequently 8 bar sections end up turning into 16... 16 into 32...

anyways... short tracks strike every listener differently.

I don't mind the length of Madlib's tracks, the way they end does piss me off sometimes though, I mean how fucking hard is it to make a track atleast fade out?
