sick of staring at music

Post by adapter pilot »

I'm sick as shit of staring at a screen and "watching" my music go by.
Any tips for skipping the computer and going hardware alone?
I got the 404.
I guess I'm trying to figure out where to start. :?
my brain aint trained to work that way yet.....

maybe i don't unnerstan the question....

but yeah, nothing beats the "staring at waves / track" headfuck like just having a three-character LED to use...plus the "mark" button? yr in that stage of just listening and making stuff.

you dont have to be looking at the computer to be using it. get in the groove and record parts onto your 404 instead of sequencing if thats your thing. but youll find yourself paying 2000 dollars + for a decent polyphonic synth or keyboard

record in something that you can cut up across some pads and play with it, then keep doin that with other samples and you'll keep pickin up on how to do things with it, they become second nature, and you keep progressing, don't let it syke you out man, just fuck with it a lot and you'll be rockin on it in no time

its funny you know, i think i know what yr talking about. but i think the 404 is the LEAST psyche-out sampler i've used. its just soooo basic and unbreakable.

my recommendation: hack up some shots in recycle or whatever (kicks, snares, etc, as well as some one-shot keys or horns or whatevs), record them to pads on the 404, and then TURN OFF THE PC.

just sit on the couch and bang out some stuff on the 404. play w/ the effects, and you'll be there for hours.

Reason is dope but I was told stick to one thing and master that first. when I use reason there's so many things you can do.. that I feel like a chicken with my head cut off. Stick to sampling. I have been having alot of fun sampling directly off LP's.. Maybe something to consider.

I did a lot with Reason as well before I got my SP 404. I was bored to do music by mouseclicking so I can imagine how you feel about it now. At first I felt like the sampler was kind of limited because you can only use one effect at a time and such but after a while you learn to appreciate and work with that. You den't get hung up in thousands of possibilities where you don't really know what to do next (like I do when I use software sometimes).

I have an cheap old Casio keyboard and a guitar that I use to play along some beats I do on the SP 404, that's basically all you need. You can use the internal effects of the SP to psych out your keyboard or put some cool delay on a guitar and stuff.

Like I said, it doesn't require a whole bunch of money and it's everything you need to start. Just put one or two banks full of drums and a few samples and jam with that.

I do the reason to sp thing all the time. There are no waveforms in reason, and that program is a monster. I have a bible i bought about it, and it gives hella lessons. When I am done sampling and everything, I dump all my patterns back into reason, and then mix and master from there using the mclass. its good stuff. I would like it if there were 4 effect knobs on the sp to do more with the compressor, eq, etc., so I didnt have to use reason. But it's cool.

And somehow this all draws back to midi out. Imagine if you could control reason with your 404/303......DAMNNNN!!!!

yo the main reason i love reason with my sp is that my sp-555 has loop capture and that shit makes it so fast and easy to record my ideas and delete them and rerecord them its the best thing i swear

i use a m-audio oxygen8 v2 to record reason sounds into the loop capture on my sp-555 then save that to a pad then overdub another part over the original and save to the next pad and keep overdubbing on the fisrt pad until i have like 5 pads full like the first pad has one recording the second pad has two recordingds the third pad has three recordings and so on until i have a full track ready to then record into ableton live 7 and once thats done i beef it up with ableton live7's effects and what not ...........
