I just bought one on impulse... lol. Dont know why but i figured i can learn synths from it.

You can really do some killer stuff with it, plus it's just a lot of fun! Best $40 I've ever spent.

It's always great to go to a Guitar Ctr or a keyboard shop and try out all the models- then the magic invisible force inside you guides you to the keyboard you need (and a wallet)

Microkorgs are definitly nice, I've been looking at the Mopho though, anyone here use one before?

i have a mopho and i think it's pretty fresh. either hooked up to a midi keyboard or triggered via external sequencer (mpc1k, machinedrum etc).
thing has some gnarly ass bass for your face (the sub-oscillators are hoooard). it's not too tough to tweak it without the computer, but the computer editor has a lot of options and a 4 track sequencer, all of which you can access without it, it's just a little faster that way. if you are just looking for something to do bass lines i would definitely say find a used mopho (they seem to be going in the $250-300 US range) and a cheap used midi keyboard.

but you can use it without the keyboard. you can choose which note you want to trigger and hit the "push it" button and it'll play. so you could just sample the notes you want into the SP. also you can trigger the sequences via the push it button. also i've heard some pretty good kick synthesized with it, and using it as an analog filter is pretty dope too. also using the LFO's to gate the input, filter, etc is fun. i like running the sk-1 through it...

all that being said you can't really go wrong with a microkorg or micron, both are fun and inspiring machines that sound great. the korg is more immediate while the micron has a lot more power under the hood as far as synthesis options.

however, just for fat basses i think the mopho is the best and a lot of people on other more synth oriented forums say they prefer it for basslines over the little phatty...i think it's biggest set back is that it's just a box that can be a little uninspiring for some, but that's also one of it's strengths too small studio footprint.

i guess all three will give you some dope basslines, just pick the one that you think will inspire you the most with it's interface...

Yup, that's true. Mostly people mix it with sprite or fanta or something but all in all it's disgusting, compared to other drinks.

There are lots of old synths that sound great and can be picked up relatively cheaply (if of course you are after a synth and not a rhodes or wurlitzer).

Anything subtractive and analogue (or DX7 from Yamaha if you are after digital) from Korg or Roland that was released during the 80's, while simple, produce great sounds. You don't have to buy the latest product with all the bells and whistles to acquire a great keyboard.
