MPC1000 vs. SP606 (live use)

Hey guys i just returned my mpc 1000 for a roland sp606......the reason why is because i felt that the mpc was not that versatile for me especially when it came to doing things in a live situation....some people can call me crazy because if left the "Akai" world and switched to Roland...to tell you the truth i dont really care....the mpc is great for doing one thing which is your standard sample and make a beat type production....i can make my way around a mpc no problem....i know there are some issues with the 606 having only 4 tracks stereo and 8 tracks mono.....i think i can handle it....im more leaning towards the 606 for hip hop, electronic, trip hop type things....anyways sorry for this long ass message....but if anyone can give me some free pointers and tell me why the sp is sicker than the mp please let me know....peace.

i had an sp-606.
now i have an mpc 1000 black, because i found it more strong in sequencing ,in sound and in editing. but i agree when you say that SP in general are more versatile for live situation, in fact the sp-606, for example, got more fx (and between them 1 oscillator), a D-beam and a direct-button to sample on the fly external synth to sequence.
the sp-606 is mostly conceived to work with a pc, i don't know if you will use it like that; there's a program called p606 for this.
what i didn't like from this machine was the fact that sometimes (with ROLL+2fx+pattern playing) the system was in trouble and everything became late and difficult to control. that's why soon after selling sp-606 i bought myself an sp-505 wich i found more complete (above all editing+pitch scale) except sensitive pads and ROLL.

i don't usually work many live but i think i've got the classic jj os from akai, i bouth mpc 1000 used but never saw that.

anyway anothe rgood sampler, depending on what kind of music you do,it's certainly Korg esx-1 but it is different from 16 pads-drummachine-like concept of mpc 1000 and sp-606.

JJ OS is not made by akai,
its a 3rd party OS someone's made to improve the functionality

yes, ok, i got some OS, but i don't know what os, sorry...i got classic slice and chopshop if that tell you something...but no grid and things like that.

i got jjos1 and it's made the machine soooo much better, grid edit and global pgm edit are great, pad simult and track mutes are essential. i can also save my beats without worrying aswell. i don't feel the need for 0s2 or the xl as 1 does evrything i need it to. i think the 606 voices could hold you back plus the fact it may freeze up if you do to much with it. hmmmmm

i would stick with the 1k (with JJ), and if you want mad fx cop a 404. thats the combo right there!!

it's also the setup im rocking atm :wink:

i have track mute, with the os you said you could have more tracks mute at the same time? it would be good.

yes, it's exact. in fact i was in trouble with it when i used to do many ROLL combined with 2fx...

Well i havent got the 606 yet.....i've returned my 1000....but im still waiting to hear what the best choice is for me.....ive used akai mpc's for awhile now, from the 1000, 2500, 2000xl, ive even had an ASR-10....i guess i havent found the right machine yet....im thinking about going going with something roland....either the 404, 606, or the 555, theres only one 606 availible in canada at the moment...so thats a rare piece....the 404 looks nice and mobile....and the 555 looks insane....im going to be doing mainly regular chop style production....ive even looked into the MV series but those are way too much at the moment....so as far as Roland goes....what would u guys recommend for the best sampling beat making style like, pete rock, premier, blah blah blah, and no i dont want to go back to akai.

i suggest sp-505, you have good sample chop edition more complete than sp-606 in wich chop is only automatic. sp-505 in the sp boss/roland it is close to mpc way of editing, it has the same sp-303 fx (3 less than sp-404) and is definitively more stable. but you have to renounce to sensitive pads (you have however a pad accent function not bad), to ROLL ,to apply not more than 1 fx at time and not to save in .wav. but if you like to chop and editing better, take this. you have also a pitch scale function (sp-606 don't) very useful. i thought you wanted to use it for live...i never used an sp-555, maybe this one is not bad too in a live optical way sense, i think is basically like sp-606 without chop & graphical editing and maybe without sensitive pads too...so it's up to your needs.

606 seems like a one piece studio for chopping samples and layering that on a beat all on the pattern sequencer, definitely not focused on live performances...

the 555 has a unique feature of being able to call up different saved effects at a rythmic pace just like playing samples. if you are into electronic music you know that changing between things like delay speeds or a wah lfo rate instantaneously is a MAJOR plus .
