waddup cartesia... good to have you back.

Lots of new cats on here... lots of OG members doing their thing, both on and off the boards... the arena continues to perpetuate playlist after playlist of amazing tracks... and as Jmoki mentioned, it looks like we are crazy close to wrapping up the first official SP-Forums mixtape. 8)

hey man

good to see ya here again
been reading of your new direction at em411 and livePA

i reckon, grab the Machinedrum

so you're focusing on percussion based, dub-style fuckery through outboard reverb/delay boxes?
i guess you'd sequence some simple, minimal patterns then 'play' them into a dynamic live performance?

peace

^ha ha!

yeah dude... trip man, I been wondering about those kaoss pads... and just realized that's what the kp3 is. It looks like a dope effects box, but how is it as a sample based production tool?

(maybe I should post this elsewhere as a separate thread...)

*edit*
So I just wrote a thesis  ... in case you can't tell, I am really in overload at the moment. . I can't stop thinking about something related to this at the moment... I feel more driven than I ever have before... back to making samples in Live. .

PS: Keep an eye out in the library, I'm going to upload a bunch of multisampled instrument/synth sounds for y'all soon that I'm preparing for getting my new SP-404.

OK. . .so the KP3 cost me A$700 . . u can get em round $750 most places, I managed to trick em into promising me one for $700 before they checked their prices... :D

You can't produce with it. . . I mean if you were *really* tricky you might just about be able to make some weird ambient-glitch-noise with it.

It's real strength and use is in live performance as a looper and effects box.

you could almost do a full live jam with it on its own if you filled the SD card with loops, except you have to stop all 4 of the loops from playing in order to change any of them (if you're loading them from SD card)

If you have either a) some other sound source or b) 2 KP3s,
you could do a full jam with them - because you can record a new sample in realtime without stopping.

The effects unfortunately apply to everything coming out of the KP3 rather than being routable, but they're stilll really cool.. very crazy over the top fucked up stuff mostly.
granular effects, more looping, bitcrushing, vinyl-speed/slow/revers type effects, some good basic delays, filters, reverbs too.

you can control the volume of each loop playing, so use it as a mini 4track, and if you solo one of the loops, you can resample it including effects.

Back to the rest of the rig... I'm not going to get a machinedrum, or anything that expensive for now (if I ever could afford it, I think for expensive gear I'd get the jomox xbase 888/999. . basically just for analogue kick + toms)

I'm pretty certain the following will be my exact rig, I've made 'mockups' of each piece of kit in ableton live and using my midi controllers and have been playing with it for a while... Its not overcomplicated, heaps of fun, very immediate.

My next addition will be an SP-404,
I'll use my M-Audio Axiom25 to trigger the 404 (gunna have some banks loaded up with octaves of pitched samples)

some of the more complicated bits will be pre-prepared as patterns on the 404, but the rest I will just wing, to keep it loose and a bit more raw... Drawing alot of sounds/influence from techno/minimal/progressive, but dont want it to sound so mechanical and clean.

After the 404, the next on the list is a DSI mono evolver

(man I am really regretting selling all my gear... I had an sp-404, a kp3, and an evolver once upon a time!! :P )

The evolver will serve 2 purposes... first, obviously, as a synthesiser. If you're sneaky you can get 2 mono parts out of the evolver - because each side of the stereo system has its own oscillators..

The 2nd reason I want to get an evolver is to 'fix' one of the limitations of the 404... the one that really bugs me the most - lack of amp envelope for samples! I can use the triggerable envelopes ( and the filter/filter env too!)

Once I have the evolver, I guess I will add a small mixer, to give me more routing options for effects.

Also I already have some cheap effects pedals I'm using too (behringer reverb, crossfire delay)

And that will be all really.. Im' going to make it small enough to fit in a briefcase and build rechargeable battery packs for it all.

Then the true work can begin...
Armed with my briefcase (+mic + headphones/amp).. I plan on finding an abandoned/overgrown/derelict location.

Sampling on location and producing music onsite. Bringing a few arty friends with me to 'augment' the area.. (rather than completely alter it.). . into some kind of. . magical, surreal, psychedelic fantasy version of the place

Then once the music is done, and the artists have worked their magic on the location, I want to have a party at the place. . my music + other peoples too. . live art. Nothing big, just say like 10-20 or so like-minded friends,
all in an attempt to transport everyone into a completely immersive fantasy.

maybe do the creating at the same time as the party, so that slowly the place becomes more and more twisted as our minds do?? But yeah...

LSD WOOOO!

The end. No you can't have the time back that it took you to read all that rubbish!

damn you americans and the financial crisis...

before our dollar was almost equal to yours. . and we could get cheap gear by shipping it over from america..

now our dollar sucks balls, gear prices have gone up by like 33%

sounds real nice man, especially the concepts of where/how you're playing the gear

i recently did a performance at a warehouse space with 2 visual artists and a dancer, live improv using SP404, mic, padKontrol and QY70s
managed to play a few tracks live too, as the others responded to the music through their own mediums

we're gonna set the warehouse up again for a party, so i'm preparing a set for that now...but the emphasis is on not just music but the space itself, decor, dancefloor games, roving performance etc

sounds like we're on the same page with this shit, be great to collaborate in the future. the loose group i collab with are really open to all this, especially the renegade live PA aspect. the party is only in planning stages, but if you have a set ready by then you should come to Melbs and play at it

awesome man,

Like the sounds of what you've got goin on over there...!

One day I will get to melbourne.. Let me know what happens with these warehouse things youre doin, even if I only come check one out from the other side of the stage.

I have a feeling I'm going to have to abandon adelaide at some point... People aren't so open to things here.
Still, I feel I should at least try to change things here.
