selecting patterns without playing them

hey guys
i just wanted to know if there's any possibility to preselect a pattern without automatically starting to play it. sometimes i'm triggering some patterns with the start and stop signals from my rc 50. and in some of our songs are some stop and go moments where i need to change the pattern real quick and the only way i can do it now is to quickly turn down the volume of the sp 404 completely, push one of the pattern buttons twice to start and stop the pattern and make it the current pattern so it starts in time when i hit start on my rc 50 again. and thats nearly impossible to keep up with my drummer without leaving a big pause in the middle of the song...

hope thats not to complicated to understand

i also tried to preselect the pattern with the remain [current pad] button, but somehow that doesnt work with my sp 404.

so has any of you guys got an idea how i could manage that?

if i get you right just use the hold button in pattern mode. press it down and pick a pattern, that pattern will play when you start your other machine.
or it could work for you to make a pattern with 1 silent sample so you can switch to that
