if you sample from a super crap source then you're not leaving yourself much dynamic range to work and mix you other sounds with.

word!!

true enough, but even that's relative. my turntable is pretty bad, and most of my vinyl is dollar-bin stuff. then its going into a machine with a compressed, lower grade output (the 505). so its all kinda low fidelity along the chain.

i frankly haven't noticed much difference btwn the vinyl stuff and digital stuff i sample. but then, its all pretty lo-fi and my stuff is not showing up in car commercials.

yet.

if you do sample from a sketchy source, make sure you do in it mono, it will be easier to mix and will sound better

yo man , i have a pretty small record collection right now. maybe 300 records. a collection i went thru about 3 times, its a fairly new colelction, just started last 6 months . every time i dig i find something amazing, even records i swear i listened to before. anyway. I bet you there is something in your stash to use.

if i can ever get my whole collection together,if i move back to the city. I will need somewere to store 3000 + records. thats lots of crates.

yeah, it's crazy how this happens. i think to some degree the mood i'm in influences my ear for samples. some days i just skip right by something thinking it's not so hot and then other days i'm like "how the eff did i not grab this before". also it's crazy how much your ear changes over time, going back through records that you haven't listened to in years...

also I dig the idea of the old ipod as a sample library, i wonder if there is a way to hack ipods to play flac w/tags and everything. I'm sure there is. I was reading somewhere that with the older mini's(and maybe older ipods in general) you can open them up and put in a 32gb CF card which is more stable and saves battery life.

here ya go.

http://geektechnique.org/projectlab/759/the-ipod-mini-remastered-now-with-16gb

this is an older guide with a 16gb card (ish was like $250 in 2007!).

as far as I can tell works just the same with 32gb cards, might have to do some research to make sure that the card you're getting in compatible.

they have some on newegg.com for $60

and the ipod mini's are pretty cheap on ebay.

also with the rockbox firmware you can put flac on there so you could have tagged lossless samples at toughly 1/2 the size of .wavs

I was going to post a reply in the leak a technique section about ipods and sample libraries. What I do is make playlists of each sounds(kicks, snares, loops, voices, etc.), then just play them to find a certain sound i like while workin on something. Works like a charm. I try to format all my cds and junk to apple lossless, but thats because itunes comes with that and i dont have to download anything. But lossless is lossless, there is no difference in quality, hence "lossless". Keep diggin'.

@ reignbear - thx for that link.

@ everyone - do you find sometimes yr ipod gets wonky when its streaming thru a bunch of kicks that are, like, split seconds each?

my ipod's the first edition, but i find the playback on these super short samples to sort of race ahead of the display....so i'll hit pause to get the kick i want, but its actually three or four off.

not a big deal (just click back) but its about the only disadvantage i've found.

That is a good idea, however, when you dig you come across rekkids that you could never find on itunes, dont get me wrong the itunes idea is dope, but if a thrift store has a 5 for 1 sale and you find 2 rekkids then get 3 that look like the guys on the cover trip acid, there may be something you can sample that you have never seen, just spreading knowledge be good all!
