IMO the Subtractor and Maelstrom are great fun to program. there's a learning curve for sure, but once you're familair with the layout and singal flow you can get almost any sound you want out of them

i recommend printing out those sections of the Reason manual, they're really helpful

and Count - IMO Primo is alot less guilty of jacking loops than some dudes (*cough* MADLIB *cough*). the way Primo slices and arranges his chops mostly fucks with the original in a really funky way.

Yeah... I feel you... just the dude I used to illustrate my point. It's a toss up between him and Madlib.

As far as reason... the synth are great, to be sure. My favorite parts of that app are redrum and the NN-19. I've had a lot of fun programming redrum... and the NN-19 is nuts when you have Recycle to work with in combo.

Crazy versatile that it has the virtual synths... and the sample based stuff... and the routing options are nuts. And of course once you start working with Rewire to push it thru a bigger program like Live or ProTools, the possibilities are endless. Good times... prolly the most fun I've had using a computer, hands down. I gots a whole lotta love for that app. :lol:

I've loved Reason since version 2.0. Always seemed pretty straightforward to me. I will concede that the sequencer was always a real bitch though.

^ no doubt... I started messing with it on v1 in OS 9 on my first ibook. Used my casiotone MT-600 for my midi controller. Good times. :roll:

It does matter what you use in terms of what what machine or software are u most comfortable with... and as it turns out.. everyone will find comfort in the machine/software with the most features... BUT... if you don't know how the shit is supposed to sound... then really u need to stop making beats... Skill really comes with knowledge about ur music...NOT about how quickly u can press pads

the best way to approach it is to read as much as you can about subtractive synthesis

i sorta take this for granted 'cos i started with soft synths before i began sampling, but i realise alot of dudes here are probably quite new to synthesis

learn about envelopes (ADSR), filter types (hi, band, low pass), LFOs, waveforms (saw, tri, square, etc)

once again, the Reason manual is very helpful with this

i'll drop some links when i get home from work :wink:
