well i have turned away from my vinyl. i ran out of wax to use. until i buy some more...but i have been downloading oldies and recording them off the radio to sample. also for the drums sampling part into my 404. i just put one song on loop so the drum hit loops so its easier to edit and the start/end point...lol just thought i would share this in production techniques i any others join me on the dark side lol...

I've been sampling off recs, tapes & CDs forever.
In 2007 I started 'using' mp3s & iTunes just to listen to music- I put my vast CD collection in there + hella downloads.
If a song came up in iTunes that had a sample I'd write my own note in the "Composer" or comments field in iTunes. Then go fetch the CD, or whatever, but then I started realizing the benefit of grabbing stuff right off iTunes into the sampler. Especially for some drum sounds- you put the lower fi sound back into 16 44.1 (or whatever) and it sounds cool.
I find that mp3s of 192kbps & higher sound pretty darn good & sampled from them mixed with some grabs from records or whatever is pretty fresh.
Plus you can't beat the speed & convenience of going from song to song grabbing samples like crazy.

Try that trick for the note if you use iTunes. I write my own unique word in the composer field as I'm listening- then when it comes time for a sample grab session- I type the word in the search box & all my sampleable songs appear right & ready- I haven't even had a chance to go through them all.

It's like the modern version of putting a sticky note on a rec like" (drums side 1, song 3 end) ya dig?

I F'd around & got like 10,000 songs in iTunes. So I put my word in "composer", as time goes by I got like 150 sample ops on deck just from listening while I cook, relax, post on SP Forums etc..

Isn't in incredible how LOUD recorded material can be off the radio?
You get them broadcasting compressors brickwalling the music to almost an unreal perceived volume- if you do a side by side to the track off a disc it's like night & day

When it comes to quality, a digital version is often better than the old CD quality samples. Just a matter of compression and conversion of course depending on the source, but I often prefer the digital download versions.

Tbh I often sample straight from the laptop or my mp3 player....dont get me wrong nothing compers to the feel of a record, but not every one has a huge record collection or even good record stores near them...so why limit yourself if you get me.
Obv keep D.I.T.C and buying wax its the basis of the culture. But shits gotta move forward too...

Sample everything. Just make sure you know the limitations of sampling [email protected] mp3s, but 320kbps@48khz is fine for sampling all day in my opinion.
Then you have your lossless encoding like FLAC which is awesome for sampling.
Obviously a nice press of a classic on wax has a lot of character, but there are so many ways to process digital samples to give them extra character that a modern dj or sample artist shouldn't limit themselves.

i've got so many damned formats around the house, but i basically listen to nearly everything in digital. cuz of that, i've been sampling off the ipod for awhile now.

i basically end up dumping vinyl, cds, and whatever else onto the laptop, anyway, so i then import into the ipod for sampling off. nice and small, portable, etc.

i even looked around for a pitch shift function for ipods, but there isn't one for my version (which runs on coal).

who cares what you sample from? there is no 'wrong' sampling source format...
even the grittiest, nastiest, LoFi-est sample is just as legit as the original when it comes to making beats

I agree that you can sample anything and have it remain "legit", but if you sample from a super crap source then you're not leaving yourself much dynamic range to work and mix you other sounds with. But that's up to the individual artist and what they want the end product to be.

what i do for a couple years now, make mad tape sample archives, then make beats. i like the tape sound more and more.

I've actually been entertaining the idea of getting a second ipod just to keep my sample library on. You can use the mp3 tags to organize samples and tell about each one, where it came from, bpm, loop/one shot, etc., etc. Glad to see that others are pimpin their ipods too.
