sound engine comparison 404 vs.505 is it the same ?

hi, first post here

i use a 404 to pull samples off of records and i transfer them via memory card onto my mac to chop in Recycle and work in Reason....

i love the 404, but im thinking that a 505 will be nice because it is small enough to travel with (like the 404) and i can also chop, compose and produce (unlike the 404).

so my question is would using the sp505 to pull samples to transfer onto my mac be the same quality as the 404 ?

hi , you can do all the things on the 404 as 505.

the 505 chop and pitch is almost useless.

the 404 has a different sound. but if you keep your levels cool you will get a cleaner sound. i would say the 505 sounds a little bit cleaner.

i have the 505 and the 404.

if i understand correctly, the 505 has 20hrz output so it sounds dif from the 404. 505 also has the infamous 'long' sample setting which bit-crushes the sound a bit (making some sounds 'punchier' such as kicks).

i like the chop function, myself, and it sometimes gives me cuts i would not have thot of myself. use it often.

the pitch function is not great. but it is probably the best available in the sp- series (along w/ the 606). good enough for jazz as the saying goes.

the advantage the 505 offers is a 4-track sequencer, swing functionality, and a wav edit screen.

no idea which would be better if yr interfacing w/ yr DAW.

the 505 has the same engine that the 303 has,if I remember correctly.
Yes the 404,has a cleaner sound but from what I read,the ad/da convertors are of very good quality.
I do have both the 404 and the 505 and love them both.

i like my 404, although i dont really use it for production at all...

im not interfacing hardware with the computer ever, i switch between working with hardware and working with Reason, Recycle, Live...

if the 303 and 505 have the same sound engine and effects thats cool with me... ive heard a lot of tracks produced by madlib with just a 303 that sound nice...

ive owned two 202's and a 404... love all the roland/boss joints

same here,I use a bit of software but I do use hardware in a different setup.
Sorry,I forgot to mention that the AD/DA convertors that I was talking about,are the 505's.
I hear you about Madlib,when he first revealed that he was mainly using the 303 for his hiphop stuff,heads couldn't believe him!!

damn man, i can't imagine not usin the box to cut, let alone produce, you really only use it for gettin samples and maybe then as an effects box for those samples before you export for your mac?? i'd try to get a little bit busier usin the box more, get a midi cable and sequence on your comp, but do all the choppin in the box, shit is so easy, the only time i've ever really been fully agitated to the point that i wanted to do somethin on the comp instead involved no chopping, its when i have a straight loop in a sequence and it is obviously a BPM between 2 whole numbers, it never sounds right to me, but the shit that i chop and sequence on the sp i always feel good about, thats what its made for

The 505 has bit more of an old school sound. It has the same sound as the 303. Its bit smoother and a little more lofi. The difference is in the converters. I actually loved the pitch bank on the 505... that feature alone made it very hard to give up. It doesnt work good on loops and things its mainly for single notes and stuff but its very good for making basslines or getting a guitar or piano note or something it and making an octave out of it. I definitely like the 404 more overall though. The load times on the 505 are pretty long and I dont like editing with a wheel and screen. I prefer the 404s approach.

...the sp-606 don't have a pitch function. if yes, i never sow it (and i look for it hardly)...i heard that his pitch shift fx crapy-don't-wanted-thing could be "correct" and compressed with the Master function...
