keyboard style pitch
Hey peeps,
1) I am into SP-505 and it has pitch function that lays out your sample across one octave so that you can play that sample like on a keyboard or even use an midi velocity sensitive keyboard for this. Does SP-606 still has this feature? I have red the manual but there is nothing about this feature. I guess it was cut out. But why?
2) On 505 you could access sample chop and manually create chops by modifying chop function produced results. As far as I know on SP-606 you can only perform auto chop and thats all - you cant modify its results (by this I mean manually adjust each chops start and end points) manually before you save those chops. Is it possible or not?
Cheers.

Although the 606 doesn't have the pitch function onboard, the same results can be achieved with a computer. See 606man's Multisample threads.
As for the chopper, you cannot manually chop a sample, however, you are able to edit the results (start and end points). The autochop does a decent job, and with the sample editing, you can clean up the chops to your liking.

dang, I hate ROLAND why they release a model that is weaker than the original sampler.
i love 505 because i don't have to use a PC thats the main idea, I went away from software beat making a year ago and want to forget about it.
i wanted to cop 606 because of the better looks and the 3 effects support as well as the velocity sensitive pads, although you can edit the sensitivity on the 505 using microscope edit sometimes i guess it is a bit too hard to do this manually.

Ya.. its a real shame roland decided to drop alot of features on the 606. I cant understand for the life of me why they would do this. The 606 adds alot of really nice features but I sitll prefer the 505 as a standalone unit because pf the pitch banks and the autochop that let u edit each chop yourself after it autochoped and the fact that you could break your loop down into 32 samples instead of just 16. Owel....what are you gonna do ?

A lot of features? Two, in fact. And for sensible reasons too.
The 606 is designed for use with a computer for composition. If you don't like computers the 606 is not the sampler for you. I came from trackers on the computer, so for me it makes sense to use a sampler that let's me do all the computer tricks that I've learned over the past 15 years, while still allowing me to leave the computer home for stage work.
Pitch control is not necessary because it's painless to get the computer to do it. The sound is way better too.
The autochop function works fine - if for some strange reason you need more than 16 chops (4 bar loop maybe?) simply cut the sample in half first. Wow! 32 chops.
The 606 has many many many features that the 505 'lacks' - it is by far the most capable SP imo.

The 606 definately adds alot of great things and it scomputer integration is crazy. My point is just why would you remove features that were already there that people liked. I can understand expanding those features with computer integration... but replacing them just doesnt make much sense to me. And 32 chops is real usefull when your sampling long stuff from records for remixing and stuff like that. I dont mind 16, 16 works...but again... if you had 32 to begin with why go down to 16 ? And te autochop does work good... but the ability to be able to adjust the autochop b4 assigning it to the pads is a nice thing to have that saves time... again... something u can live withouth but why take it out if it was already there

I understand what you're saying man - it seems strange the way that Roland think. Take the 555; it drops the balanced connections, drops effects and effect engines, has no master compressor, cuts down on pad banks, cuts down the sequencer to nothing; takes out step sequencing and so on and so forth...
Why would a newer model have less features? It's like they want each machine to have its own following...We need to stop comparing the machines and use each one for its strengths.
Notice Roland don't have an 'SP Comparison Chart' like Akai do for the MPC?

Ya thats the point..what are they thinking ! lol. I thought the 555 was gonna be an intermediate between the 404 and 606. That would make it a more sensible machine... but apparently its replacing the 606. Now, a new flagsip SP that can basically merge a 555 with a 606 would be a nice thing to see.

Sad thing is that most music stores in my neighborhood think it also replaces the SP 606 ... It's like nearly impossible to get one here.

The 606 is in fact being discontinued. It looks like the rumors about the 707 may be true !

I'd definitely want a 707 if it has like all the good things from 606 and 505 combined and then some. Probably will be expensive tho :-p
