Hey I remember when I was in the exact same position. I'm read the other posts in here and everything they said looked pretty good to me (I'm not familiar with the particular products they recommended though). I have to agree that you definitely need an audio interface. Recording into your computers 1/8" line in jack probly wont sound very good. One with many inputs would be perfect but those are expensive.
An analog mixer would work (read the manual and fool around with all [the tape in/ tape to mix / tape to control room / ctr room outs / main outs / sends / aux recieve] to figure out what routing you need. If you're really only using the SP as an FX unit then maybe the Send jack would work but I'm not sure. Honestly I've heard bad things about Behringer in general. I had one of their UB802's and my left channel mysteriously broke too (wtf?!).
Someone recommended one of those USB mixers/audio interfaces, and honestly that sounds perfect for what you're doin. That way you can kill two birds with one stone and upgrade either part later if you want.
Heh, thinking about your setup is making my head hurt but I'm sure it'd be easy if you thought it out. (With a mixer) maybe try putting your 404 on the SEND/RETURN jacks, so you could control which devices are sent to the 0404, and have the the Main outs to the laptop and use a regular channel for the input from it. Or the other way around? Or use the To/From Tape (w buttons) if there is one.
