I have read somewhere that the SP 404 's memory can be up to 1 GB. Does this literally mean that you can load 1 GB of samples in it or did I get the wrond idea?

SP-404 plays the samples directly from CF card.

What I was looking for is a way to chop some of my tracks (made in pc) to loops and load them to a sampler so that i could gig without a pc (which is a nightmare on stage).

A fellow I knew did this on SP 808.

Do you think it's possible with the 404?

Hi - the 404 is perfect for this.

How much of your stuff will fit on the 1Gig card depends how you load it in.

Importing via the card means there has to be room for your original loops AND the SP's own stored versions of them (the 404 compresses audio data about 50%). The 404 doesn't play the originals and won't delete them.
You can maximise memory space by importing half your loops, put the card back in the computer, delete the originals, put the rest on the card and then back in the 404 import these. Back in the computer again and you can delete the last originals to leave space for future imports.

Or - you can just record your stuff into the 404 using analog RCA cable and trim and loop them there. Some users do seem to like the sound of stuff that's been recorded into the 404 rather than imported as files off the card. The trimmed loops can be fixed so the unused memory is freed up. This way as much of the card as possible can be used since it doesn't need the original audio file to be on there in the first place.

Don't forget the 404 has 2 internal banks with 16MB memory - so you can import some favorite one-shots in them and jam over your loops.

For gigs - don't forget to have a backup of the card with your set on it. Once a card's been formatted in the 404, you can use a computer to copy all the files from your "master" card onto it.

If you become hooked on the 404 and begin to rely on it - it might really be worth getting a second one as spare. ;)
