I have to say that I've had a hard time with making my tracks on the SP, without it sounding dirty and clean at the same time (if you catch my drift?). I always wondered how madlib and flying lotus got their drums to sound so natural without sounding like they lack rhythm, although they both use other external devices to sequence their drums.

I would have to say that I've found my way of using the SP for both sequencing drums and sample patterns without having to feel like you worked so hard chopping up samples for nothing. I use both the SP 303 and 404 simultaneously (303 for drums and 404 for samples) and I use the EXT SOURCE to drop and bring in the drums.

I would say the best way to do this is by plugging the 303 into the 404 and running both sounds through the 404. I also plug my turntable into the 303 and record directly into the 404 and vice versa when I import drums onto my 404's flash drive (I bought a 303 on ebay and forgot to ask if it came with one). Anyway, enough of my talking and on to the beat. It's not finished but I'm happy with the outcome. Peace.

I think Madlib uses his mpc to lay down drum tracks, I used to beat myself up 'cause I can't flip it so smooth like Madlib on the 303 but than again all I use is my 303 to do everything which can be a challenge since I'm still learning. I guess in the end it's all great practice. I always like your SP tracks AB, real inspiring work.

Thanks Euclid- I'm feeling your beats as well- everyone on here is an inspiration to me, so I should be thanking you for that as well. As far as the madlib- I would not be surprised, because it sounds TOO good. I still cannot wrap my head around the Madvillainy album, because it's it's not like any other album I've heard before. I do like his less abstract stuff like the Beat Konducta Vol. 0. I had no idea that those were the tracks used on [adult swim] during 2003-2004. Ridiculous!

I've met him once, but that's before I got heavy into making my own beats, but then again I was so much of a fan that I lost my train of thought...lol. Again thanks for the appreciation. Peace

Perhaps it's not so much the sequencing, but more the result of applying some mastering tricks? Of course there is a huge difference in sequencing still between the 303 and an MPC.

some people don't know this but dilla made 29 of the 31 beats on the 303 for donuts.

madlib also seems to use alot of samples with drums already in em, but they always come out soundin real tight, i don't know how he does it, and when he does sequence he usually keeps it fairly simple, i think he used chopped breaks alot too, not just single hits sequenced, although i'm sure dude has done any way we can name of puttin drums and tracks together
