i would like your tips on collaborating.
i have heard rumors about JAYLIB while dilla did drums madlib did the samples?

and also what is a good way to collaborate say with vocals, other beats, and other hardware, or should one guy do a track and another do another track and split the album?

on that album they sent each other beats where one would rhyme over the others joint. but for the ones that they both were on i think thats when they collab on it

collabin @ a distance is kinda hard. what ive done is tack a beat that u like but dont know where to take it, send it to another cat and he'll flip it and we go from there. during that process u get a feel 4 eachother and urself.

its best to send stems of a song so if u can track it out and send it that way.

honestly theres allotta ways to go about it u just have to try some cats...peace

ive been collaboing with my friend i met on a website. guy lives in WA state and i live in wisconsin so there is a distance problem. the way we split it up is i normally send him melody and he adds drums/embellishments, will flip the melody/harmony for a nice breakdown or "part B" instead of just having the same loop over and over.

I really enjoy this way of collaboration, and heres a few reasons why.

1. we are both used to working alone, and although we are collaborating on this we both still get to work alone. no one looking over your shoulder, no one suggesting this or that. you get to complete the amount you want to complete, how you want to complete it until you send it back to the other person. if you are both happy with how it goes, then its all gravy, if not the other person can flip it again.

2. it really stimulates creative ideas. that one day your melodies just arent flowing, the other person sends you something that you are really feeling and everything snaps into place. its extremely inspirational.

3. the way sound affects different people. a synth loop i record and send to my guy might have some meaning for me, but a completely different meaning for him. and its super satisfying to hear something you've created, being used in ways you never thought possible.

on the technical side, we decided on using fruity loops for this. for him, is all he knows, and he really can do some ill shit with it. hes mostly a sample based looping type producer, so it doesnt realyl matter what software he uses. me, ill sample but im more of a make-it-yourself type producer, utilizing my micron, reason and all types of shit to create music. the nice thing about FL is that it has an export option that creates a folder full of the individual tracks you made in FL. so sendinging back and forth VIA sendspace is super easy.

Id say the best way to collabo would be worked out creatively and dynamically between you and your partner. use both of your individual strengths to make the beats/songs stronger. let the composer do the composing, let the drum master do the drums, the arranger the arranging, etc.

heres a link to me and my mans collabo so far

i was doing a thing called "the group of sixxx" with five other guys. there's a writer, a graphic artist, photographer, couple of musicians....but we're making music.

we all start making a track the same day. every three weeks we'd mail each other that single track (so, drums, or bass, or whatever). next guy gets the track, adds his track, three weeks later mails both tracks it to the next guy, who adds his track, and onwards.

the key is that everyone starts their FIRST track the same day.

the end result is six songs, of six tracks, by six guys. yes: 666.

we never really sat and mixed or mastered anything, but here's a smattering of the results:

it was a good project for me, cuz there's a fair degree of sonic weird in there.

i'm mostly playing fugged-up-guitar and singing, but you can hear all the styles we like smashing into each other.
