trick for muting samples in a pattern

this is kind of simple but ive been messing with using GATE to mute samples in a 2 bar beat. my samples are loops i made but i recorded them into the pattern without loop or gate lit, so now when its playing i can hit gate while one of them is the current pad and it will now play for just a fraction of a second. so its not perfect but its pretty easy, maybe some of you seasoned vets can expand on it

I stumbled upon that myself answering a question for someone about why their samples were being cut off when played in the pattern sequencer. The sound clips a little with a quick attack and then nothing so it can be used creatively but I haven't incorporated into any tracks myself. Nice tip

there's also the mfx 22 / sub-osc trick, where any pad you've assigned this effect to can be silenced by getting full cntrl 3 power....bring it back in (vol control) by turning cntrl 3 (there's a youtube vid about this somewhere)

my little trick is to use mfx 23, where any pad you hold (ie: turn cntrl 3 to "on") will repeat. if you catch a part of the sample that is silent, it will just hold the silence until you drop it back in (ie: turn it "off").

You wanna hear something really cool? Especially useful if you working with loops. Randomly hit [Mark] while your patterns play. I love the effect on drumloops and less aggressive melodies. Once you get an ear for what it does it's almost like having the BPM Looper on the 303.

For muting samples you can also use the isolator effect with all 3 knows turned completely down.

i mentioned it in another thread, but you can also do quick and easy track muting on somethin by having a bunch of blank air at the end of a sample so that if you put it in reverse, its not going to hit the "beginning" (end of the sample being reversed after all the blank air) of the reverse sample before the pad gets hit again in that sequence, it works great for drum muting, but i think it can be used with anything, you just need to have good timing hitting reverse so it goes back to normal just as it would be getting triggered, or you can do it before so it starts to play and then triggers again right after, good for coming out of a muted part anyway

i really liked how this post turned out with everyone sharing their own personal tip

i got a follow up for the gate thing, its obv. but just to mention, say you got your 1 measure loop sample and you record it into the pattern with gate on for the first 2 beats of every measure. then when you play it back you can take gate off for full length play, real cool with a hi hat loop
