midi and pads

so what i want to do is either 1.) control 808 pads with 505 pads via midi

or 2.) record 808 pads/midi messages on the 505 pattern recorder.
ultimately using the 505 pattern seq for the 808 sounds...

i spent a few minutes changing pad banks and notes around trying to sync these up but as of now the only thing i can do sync it up with play and rec start-stop.

can anyone give some 505/midi pointers?
one more thing, iwas reading about program change but don't quite understand it, is this my problem?

i got the 505 to send messages from the preset pad banks. wasn't really all that hard, just set both to same midi channel and start from C(36). but i have a new problem which is where i can't figure out how to send from bank 5 which is a user bank and i can actually change the parameters of midi message sent. is this where program change comes in? i spent most of last night reading up on midi and program change but i haven't figured this out. so the question is;

how do i send midi message (note on) to the 808 from a user bank(bank5+)?
