Crucial question (for me) about the SP-555 before buying :)

Hello, from France (the country where the SP-555 costs $650...) !

I just have one question regarding live performance sampling. I watched the usual demos of the 555 on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OHE6GRbruw), and from what I understand, you are obliged to stop playback each time you want to assign a new sample you just recorded, to a new pad, otherwise it just overdubs over the current one.

Is that correct ? Or is there a way I can sample a beat, assign it to pad 1, and then without stoping playback, sample like a voice but have it "recorded" separetely and assign it to pad 2, and so on, but all without stoping playback (as it would be needed in a live performance) ?

Hope anyone out there has an answer

to my knowlege this is not possible, everythime you want to record a sample to a pad, the one that is playing stopps!
i also think this is bad!
it is the same, when you are playing a pattern and you want to record a new sample, the sp555 stops playing the pattern?
or am i worng, frantic?

ah, of course you can use the live loop thing, but i think this is not what you want, casue you do not get seperated samples, but a mix of all!

gee this is incredible, that's like the whole point of it, havig to stop playback just makes no sense in a live performance

We found a way to make this work. Takes some practice to get the timing right though.

Dog, you need to get two sp 404s. That would solve all your problems.

Seriously, think about it.

One could be looping while the other records from a direct source or if you want to make it dirty, you could just record everything going on....

I mean, I think the key to making samplers fun is just having them so packed full of sick shit that looping what's going on would be pointless because of all the other badass stuff you've already got ready to trigger.

Yeah, they are suppose to indeed.

I hope a new SP will have a separate independent sampler section with a mixer / volume kind of thing, so you can sample live without any drawbacks, then mix it back into the song... all on the fly.

There's a lot more Roland can do with their gear for live situations. I'd imagine a slick SP-RMX, totally up to the task of dealing with complicated live situations, sampling and resampling on the fly and so on. There'd be quite a list of features that would be awesome to have in such a unit.

The Loop Capture on the SP-555 ís great though.

Well, Mike Acosta comes around from time to time so it might be possible that some of the feedback and thoughts in the forum get translated to R&D, slim chance but it's something. I would like to have a pattern going and sample at the same time too.

so does anyone have a suggestion on what could be an alternative solution to the sp-555 (which isn't really one anyway when it comes to live sampling to different "tracks") ? different model / combinaison of models ?

damn, so that's what I thought, there isn't a single multitrack realtime sampler with effects on board out there :shock:

why aren't there at least 50 different models damn it !
