QUANTIZE. IS IT 100% RELIABLE?

Yo. Peoples, this is my first post.

I want to ask you:

is the quantize setting on the 404 completly reliable, or even with quantize 4 the the position of the sound you lay will depend on the timing of my playing?

hope I'm not too confusing.

another shit: the tricks i've learnt here don't work on my 404, like erasing the samples from bank A a and all varietys of pattern copy. that sucks.

any help?

The quantizing is pretty reliable. I have never had any probs with any quantizing on any machine, including the 404. Unless you set your quantize to 4 and hit your bass drum after the second beat hoping it will put it in the one.

To erase samples/patterns off of banks A-B, you must turn off card protect. I don't remember how to do it, but it is in the manual.

THAT CLEARED MY HEAD ABOUT THIS MATTER. MAYBE I'M SMOKING TO MUCH JOINTS.

OR I GUESS AFTER I HEAR THE SAME LOOP FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE OFF BEAT. THAT STARTED TO MAKE ME DOUBTFUL.

ABOUT ERASING THE A BANK, I DELETED ALL THE SAMPLES BUT WHEN I WENT TO RECORD NEW SHIT ON THE PADS, FIRST I NOTICED THE REC. BUTTON DIDN'T FUNCTION ON BANK A AND THEN THAT THE PADS I'VE JUST DELETED WERE STILL ALL THERE...FUCK.

i feel you when you listen to the same thing for to long... I usually only quantize 2 snares and my first kick. After that everything is quantize free.

You must unprotect banks A & B. I can't find my manual. I am going nuts looking for it. But in there it tells you how to unprotect the memory. Then you can do "whatever you like" (T.I. kinda popped in my head) on those banks. Good luck

sometimes i get confused, but i got over it a while ago. the key is to take little breaks in between so your ears don't get fatigued. Why doesn't the unprotect work for you????

For turning off the protection of the A bank & the B bank you must turn on the power holding on cancel button .. that's what says the manual. i have the 404 european version (i'm italian)..if you do that P.of appairs in the display.This setting will be remembered until you don't initialize the memory of your SP.If it' does not work 4 you try to initialize your SP holding down cancel remain del while turning on the power...i hope you'll fix your trouble bye!

I thought the quantize was doubtful...sorta still do at times thinks its *slightly* wobbly (im perfectionist with this sorta shit). I realised its because some times samples might hav a small silence before the hit...even a few fractions of a second...so they land slightly after everything else. Make sure everythin pops as soon as u slam the pad

or even better dont quantize as much....keep it loose and raw.

now I'm certain of that shit.

It wasn't the blunts...

but still, there's samples that I fine-tune to max and do the best i can with the bpm and still don't fix exacly like i do.

***is there any more things i can do to make the sample hit the bit i want more thightly????***

The sample having a lil air in the beginning has nothing to do with the quantize. To adjust your sample, hit the pad you want to adjust and then hit start/end/level and turn knob 2 (the one after volume). This will adjust the start time in milliseconds. do it until you like.

ONE THING I FEEL IS: WHEN I'M JUST HITTING PADS OVER A PATTERN, SHIT SOUNDS PERFECT, BUT WHEN I'M IN RECORD MODE SHIT SOUNDS A LITTLE DIFERENT, AND THIS IS WITH ANY PORTION OF QUANTIZE OR NO QUANTIZE...

I SPENT 3 HOURS LAST NIGHT DEALING WITH THIS SHIT.

i understand what you mean now... i feel the same way sometimes, but i think its in my head. when im hittin the pads im not thinking about it. but when recording, im over thinking, so i just record and dont think bout it, then later i'll relisten and shit sounds good.

it's not in the 404 manual but you can turn off caps lock by pressing Caps Lock on your keyboard
