tips on finding breaks

i ussually just listen to the song a few times. find a certain spot where no vocals are and sample it. then i go listen to it again and find something different and layer or just make it the chorus.

Hmm.. had a few drinks and stuff last night but I'm quite sure I replied to this...?? Anyways I'm used to scratching and messing with the turntables so vinyl is the natural and fun way to do it for me. I'm not a purist but that's how it usually goes. For finding breaks and stuff to sample I just make a simple drumbeat on the 404 (maybe throw a bassline in there too) and start playing/jamming/scratching the records over the beat. It's easy to adjust the beat to the song tempo with the tap tempo function.

man something thats really fun to do,which i've been doing a lot of lately,is finding drum solos on jazz records..extended ones that have all the elements of a good break in them-some dope snares,kicks,open & closed hats,rides,rolls,etc,even if they're not in any real particular pattern..and creating my own breaks out of them with the individual hits.also try layering the kicks and snares (just a little,you dont wanna drown out the sound of the originals) with some shit you already got to give it some more snap and bottom end.its pretty easy to come up with something that has the sound of a classic break,but its all your own..cats'll be asking you "what break is that?",lol.this of course also goes for soul ,funk,and rock records as well-but to me the best breakbeat sounds come from the old jazz joints...also try getting two breaks from a break record or one of those websites or something with somewhat simmilar drum patterns,get em at the same tempo and layer them together.thats something large professor and some other cats did in the 90's when producers were running out of original breaks to use.

like i said, some hip hop nerd will reply. lol. but some could say taking drums off records is cheating, learn to play them. either way you go someone will come along and tell you your cheating. like some people will do there chops on computer and load them up on there sp/mpc. there cheating huh? some will do there "auto chop" there cheating huh? i only posted the link because there seem to be a lot of new comers to beat making and sp's...i do dig and get my drums off records, but if i need some drums when i ain't around some good records. why not grab some there. more Nerds :shock:

Oh, you got me all wrong - sorry - I AGREE with you.

I'm saying that "cheating" doesn't even factor into the equation when it comes to making music; because making music is no game. It's something we all take pretty seriously. Is it cheating if you use a hammer to build a house? Balls, no.

But, either way, you're right, I'm a nerd all the same.

lol. its all good. i have been up all night and i might have replied to fast. but i have seen a lot of that talk about how "i only sample off original pressed records, no reissue...blah blah blah" crap. on some ol "this is how its done and if you don't do it like this, you suck" lol! those dudes are the Nerds i was talking bout. i guess i been drinking some haterade.

but maybe someday in the future we can build houses with out a hammer....lol!

Yeah, but it's not like it reaaaaaally matters all that much in the end. It's like sampling from a CD, downsampling it to lower bits and heck you won't even hear the difference between a CD and LP. Sure, they are different, but because the samples end up in a new song anyways, who gives? I don't know of anyone who can hear the difference, especially when you resample a nice EQ over the samples.

I did recently find out that LP quality is usually quite variable when it comes to sampling. It's more old skool, but not necessarily more useful.

I tend to use the best of both worlds though, same goes for online archives of drumbreaks and so on. I wouldn't buy sample CDs though, as most only have very little interesting stuff on it, but you pay for the entire CD.

I personally only sample from analog sources. Thats just how I roll. I dont hold other to the same standards tho...thats just silly

What I don't understand is when people say I only sample from analog because it sounds better (not anyone on this forum in particular) when as soon as it goes into whatever machine your using, it's converted to digital and loses the good quality that people like, except for you still have vinyl cracking or tape his or whatever. But still I thought this thread was gonna be about how to find records with good breaks on em when digging, cos I always seem to get no good breaks.

Like I said listen to ALOT of music, learn to buy certain record labels that you like, and artists that you like. Find out what instruments they play and so on, one tip I can give is buy music that you would listen to. I used to try and buy records just to sample and you end up with a bunch of crappy records that you cant even give somebody.
