Does the 303 sound better than the 404?

Post by earwolf »

Debate abounds at http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=102320

Anyone here used both? Is there a difference? In what way?

Cheers

Probably the same type of difference people find between a MPC 2000xl and a 1000... barely noticeable?

hmm - seems like some are saying its more like the difference between an mpc60 and an mpc1000 aka a more obvious sonic difference - with the 303 being the 60 in this example

oh word thanks for the info. i guess this is what caught my eye:

Euclid Ov Oåklånd wrote:I like the 303 myself, the 404 sounds a little too sharp for my ear. I think the 303 at normal sample rate sounds the best. But that's why I have a 303, I made all these comparisons right after the 404 came out and I still like the 303's sound a little better, but I like the effects on the 404. I wonder if it would be possible to put the 404's effect chip in my 303.

seems to be that disregarding 'lo-fi' mode, the standard 303 sound is less harsh than the 404. i wonder what roland changed in the circuits? i'm guessing it cant be THAT big a difference in sound or more people would have mentioned it - or maybe they never used a 303...

OR maybe it's the 'madlib' factor

yeah man i saw this on the mpc forums yesterday. I was suprised to see some comments that the 404 sounds bad. It has good sound quality to my ears.

Ive owned both. The sound of the 404 is technically "better" because it has better quality converters. But if your going for fat dirty sounds the 303 is the winner. Kicks sounds crazy on the 303. The 404 however has alot more depth to it and can still get plenty dirty.

Yeah, me and most blunted loaded the same exact samples into my 303 and his 404 and found there are little differences. Like Dj Frantic said, the difference in phatness or warmth is barely noticeable and the 404 seems to actually have a lower sound floor if you mix in the box.
