Changing sample placements

Whats up people? If I change a Sample that is being used in a pattern on bank A, pad 1 to bank C pad 1 (the sample is changing not the pattern), how do I get the 404 to know that it is the same sample used in the pattern. when I play the sequence back that sample is gone because it still thinks to play bank A pad 1. Don't know if there is a way around this.

If you read my post on 404 organization, I like to keep the first 2 banks open. I have to track in Pro Tools as soon as I am done with a beat or I can't really start another. Thanks.

The 404 only remembers to sequence the pad you hit while recording, not the individual sample.

Sometimes after I finish a beat I'll erase all the main samples from the machine but keep the pattern sequence and drum sounds loaded then sample new sounds to the pads you had used for the main samples in your pattern and see what comes out.

No doubt, if you change everything then you can have like a piano sound playing what was the hi-hat rhythm and like the hi-hats playing what used to be the bass and so on. It can make some interesting arrangements.

Yea...all i need now is to look for a good keyboard controller or mini synth to complete my backpack studio.

I am going to buy another 404 just incase Roland discontinues them or if mine breaks after warranty. and maybe try and see if I can have one of my geeky friends open up my 404 and rearrange some of the wires and put in one of those little midi boards from "midibox" or something like that so I can control reason or something from the 404.....Midi out is the only one thing I wish the 404 had....(and maybe better pitch shifting & reverb, but the midi out is the biggie)

Hopefully it can be done.

Yeah, you have to just erase the old hit and redo it. Or put the sample back where it was.

yeah, i do this too. the results always make me wish i'd thought of it in the first place...

i wouldn't bother opening it up. just get a dr-202, they're hella cheap (cuz nobody realizes they're potential) and they send midi messages that could control reason or just get a kontrolpad which is very nice with the 404, if you don't believe me ask iG9 or drewzle.

as for a keyboard, find a cheap casio/yamaha with midi out and you'll most likely be jamming 25/37/49 pads across the board all battery powered.

oh and the dr-202 is battery powered too, ilove mine (it even has an external sequencer that was intended for the sp-202, but you can use for keyboards or whatever).

Yeah, even if you modify the box you would have to rewrite the program to utilize the new hardware added. We need a master hacker/coder to crack the sp software and rewrite it.

damn I didnt think about that....I suck with that hackin stuff.. Thats why i keep geeky friends. (Geeky is not an insult, it is perfectly acceptable to my very computer savvy friends) I'll see if they can do something with it.

the dr-202 seems pretty cool, the only thing is it's only a 3 track. Then again, the 404 is only 1, but I don't want to drop money on something that does almost the same thing as my 404, cause then I will try to only use one machine, & I don't want to give up my 404.
Although I was looking at the mc-808....seems pretty sweet (although I haven't found any forums on these). Any thoughts. it looks like 5t would be a good companion to my 404. although it does seem to not fit my backpack studio deal. I don't believe it is battery powered.

In reality, what is the difference between these roland products (sp, mc, dr)

I see it as the sp is your basic sampler, the mc/dr does a lil more the the sp feature wise, and the mv does, well, everything. Please fill me with knowledge.

as far as i know the dr-202 is the only dr with an ext track. and it does a lot more than you might think. it saves bpm, has both song and pattern ability (not just pattern like the 404), it can send midi through almost all knobs and buttons (reason controller!?!) and it even has recordable track mutes (but only for the drum part). another sweet thing is it has tr-808, 909 sounds plus it can sound reasonably close to a 303 at times as well. oh and you can lay the bass parts out over keys.

the pads can be dodgy but it's not a big deal to me. one thing i love about this it has really helped me learn drums. oh and it has step and realtime record, shitload of rolls and you can program your own drum kits (or at least pick and choose, then enhance to your delight).

since i got mine for less than 10,000 yen (a bill) i say that's a hell of nice piece a gear.

never owned a mc.
