to quantize or not to quantize

DJ Aerial: I couldn't tell whether or not that was a joke...

DJ Frantic: Are you quantizing less on the 555 because you find it easier to bang out the beats due to the pads having less play, or is it more that you're making different style beats on the different machines?

When I'm working with drum breaks (chops) I'm always using quantize. You can get a nice swing by using different chops/sounds.
When I comes to HipHop beats I stay away from quantizing as much as possible. (beside the kick on the 1's) oh wait I got deja vu right now... :lol:

as soon as i set myself a formula on things like quantize to use, my style goes to hell.
generally tho, 16 on the kiks, 8 on the hats (i find your ear needs some consistant hit to orientate yourself, at least with my beats), and then i loev layering tonns of other percs without quant (including hi hats), and the swing comes accordingly. that way i acheive a sort of straight head nod rytham, with some loose swing keepin things shuffling along.
its also cool to do both on one layer, say. i would quantize my main snare, then layer over a loose clap or click or whatever landing generally on the snare, giving a differant sound every time. sounds sweet

no joke, i quantize everything. i like a lot of freehand stuff it's just not the way i usually work. i like to be able to drop my own homemade beats into a house set, and that requires reliable timing.
i know the sp line isn't really geared towards that... but it's working out nicely. i probably could have gone with an mc-808 and been really happy but i love my 555 and all its little quirks

I must admit that for my very-simple drum patterns I used to make before the current beatbattle, I've always quantized almost everything.

But I decided to change a lil bit the style of my drum patterns, and from now on, when I work on a more complex pattern I usually leave qntz OFF

When it comes to the other samples, it really depends on the kind of samples, but qntz is generally used a lot.

i've usually quantize (16.3 for kicks, 4 for snares, 8 for hats), lately i've been trying to fuck with not using quantize - usually comes out real sloppy and takes a lot of tries to get it to sound right.

i don't really know, doesn't seem like it to me. it's kind of got a swing to it.

16.3 is just sixteenth note triplets so it sound different.
