midi pitch-bend to current pad or all.
midi mod wheel, volume and expression controllers to the FX parameter knobs.
A computer editor so you can assemble samples in a virtual SP & when it's right, export to a CF card so everything is ready to go with the samples already imported to SP card banks.
By virtual SP, I think you only need to see how the banks, pads and sample modes go - no need to cover the FX and edit functions.

Yeah, I think the concept of autochopping by 'level' usually doesn't work very well. Of course it depends on the kind of samples, but I think having something that chops at regular intervals would be great.
Also, I believe manually adding in markers, so you can chop it up in one go is what should be added to a future SP-707. Having to preview unusable autochopped parts is fine, as long as you can manually adjust afterwards. Now, at least on the 505 and 606, it takes more time than it should.

As regards pc "helper" software - Roland belatedly provided some for the first gen recorders such as Boss BR8 and SP-808 zip drive discs (after originally saying the discs couldn't be used in a pc!). There probably is a family format for all the card based SP units so something that supports most of them, including older models is probably not impossible.

word, they need to give up the goods, go open source or whatnot, throw us a bone. or some genius like JJ needs to step out of the shadows wit da remedy UGGHHHHHHHH SO FONKY
All in all the 404 is as near perfect for what it is. I had an mpc, but gave it up quick after I got this. I am just more creative with this "instrument" than an actual machine. Remember those old school Hip hop beats which a lot of producers are trying to recreate? LIMITATIONS (and alot of analogue).
Anyway the 2 things I think would make this machine perfect would be usb/midi to control other programs or whatever, and maybe some better algorithms for certain effects, like the reverb. But the first is my only real concern. I would pay roland to add this into my unit however they can do it. It would be def worth the money.
Also maybe a drink dispenser so that way I don't have to keep getting up when I am in the groove.
