I think you need at least two things in front of you on stage. Even a DJ has two turntables and a mixer. If you were to go on stage with a 404 or 606 alone, you would be too similar to the guy with a laptop and abelton. The crowd needs to see that something's going on up there or they lose interest quickly.
In the studio I think you could make a track with a 404 alone - though you would still need a computer to record (just for ease).
Stiking a blance between 'keepin it real' and 'being practical' is the key.

most of the time I only either the 404 or the EPS. Sometimes I will use them together. depends. In the end, its all about whatever works for you.

I've used reason before, but lately I've been using the sp404 only. Theres some styles of drum programming that I just can't do with the sp alone, so I'm gonna program the drums in reason and add efx with the sp with samples. A tool is a tool. If you need a hammer a screwdrivers gonna be of little use. I've just bought an akai s20 sampler and that allows to have full pitch control on drum hits and samples. Its a massive help, and opens up loads of possibilites, but I could still make beats with just the sp!

yes i think the same....sometimes i use only my mv-8000, but...all its more easy if use specially my mc-909 and sp-404 together with my mv.
all machines give me some diferents ideas, f.e: never chop samples with my mc-909, firts mv-8000 but sometimes i use directly my sp-404 choping (marks style)...because then...i use this samples in my sp, its great!
kiss, vivi.

I believe people should only use what they have fun with
I'm a drum machine/sampler person, I don't like keyboards at all, I mean, composing is dope obviously, but I don't know, I just don't like moving my fingers all over keyboards... plus, too many possibilities overloads the creative part of my brain
I feel like I can only learn one thing and focus on one thing... not great at multi-tasking, as much as I would like to be.

Im liking my current setup at the moment. I got a software setup of guru and digital performer and a hardware setup of the 404 and moog Opus 3 keyboard.
Usually i use all of them within a track. But i like to switch between the two. The software setup allows me to do whatever i want to achieve with samples and i have the freedom to sequence them and mix them accordingly. Although, alot of the time, the software can get intimidating as theres just so much to do and mess with, that i just get lost and burned out.
So, the solution is usually turning to the 404 and moog, where i feel i know both those peices extremely well, and usually feel alot more creative and comfortable.
So, ive come to the conclusion that a good balance between gear thats varied is more beneficial in the long run. and when you outgrow equipment, the adaptation period wont be so painful...

! say use whatever it takes. Songs have an audience, and that audience isn't going to give two shits how it came together...
