Depends what you want to do with it I spose.

The 404 is perfectly capable of making the finished track if you want to work that way, tho you'll probably want to get it into a computer if only to make mp3 or CDs

I can't think of a single software program I could say is THE one. They can all do most jobs nowadays. Some like the way prog A works and some hate that and swear by Prog B.

Here's some ideas...

If you want beat matching easy and lot's of choice in the arrangement of a finished track - look at Ableton Live.

If you want to do screwy things with pitch or have to pitch fix vocals or make new harmonies a lot - look at Melodyne.

If you want to run mostly audio loops - look at Sony Acid, Fruity Loops, Garageband (on Mac).

Do you need midi sequencing and softsynths? Start with Reason or Cakewalk Project5.

For general Audio and midi production there's the various Cakewalk sequencers (Sonar) on PC, Logic on Mac and then ProTools LE or Cubase for either. Up and coming choices are Traktion and Reaper.
There's more, too many and impossible to recommend unless you know EXACTLY what you want.

For the record, I have Sonar6SE as a general audio and midi sequencer, Adobe Audition for fancy editing, noise reduction stuff. Nero for disk burning and Sony Vegas Studio for going to video. I do a lot of different kinds of audio work tho. comes down to what you need again.

There's a lot to be said for a standalone multitrack recorder - like a Roland VS or BossBR and all the others - if you want to fly in loops and hits from the 404 alongside straight recording of vocals and even a band, this is prob the easiest for good work flow - you can spend too long figuring out all the options with computer programs! I still have my old Roland VS-840 8 track, tho I swapped it's crappy 100MB zip drive for a CF card drive - massive improvement!

Why don't you go ask the FL questions on the www.futureproducers.com forum? There are more people there who use FL studio, this forum is about the roland sp series, people are more likely to come here to discuss hardware, or software directly related to the hardware FL is none of that,

i work the other way round

start off on software - find it way easier to cut up beats , time stretch loops or build them using vsts & effects, etc

then copy it over to the 404 and muck around with it

..but then im mainly interested in live performance rather than producing tracks for release
