first post and im begging for info already
Moderator: TGN
Hi, yall. After waiting the final day of Summer NAMM 2008 (Last Monday), I went out and copped an SP.
I just loaded mad samples onto the ROOT folder. And as the manual says, if the user loads a sample to PAD 1 (Bank A, B, C/G, etc.) it'll load multiple files concurrently.
But for some unknown reason, after the first sample, the system halts and LED's indicate "FULL". It doesn't matter which pad I place it on, it'll only load that one sample.
I haven't renamed my files, just kept them as is (as how I named them in my MV-8000). Now, the file that's first loaded is 1.5MB, which I don't think should be a problem. I thought of updating the OS. But I checked mine, and it's already at 1.05!!! (Latest available download is v1.04)
I'm about to hunt 'n peck out my favorite samples and name them 001.wav, 002.wav, 003.wav, etc. But I thought I'd hold off and see if I get a response from someone. I got a 1GB card (couldn't find any 512 ones). And as yall know, 1GB holds A LOT.

Are you importing the samples into the internal memory banks (A and B)? If so, then I suggest starting on the card banks (C through J), because the internal memory is limited to about five minutes in Standard quality and you may have just run out of memory. Don't forget to delete the .wav or .aif files after you've imported, else you'll end up loading those again if you import, even though you may have added new ones to the card.

im trying to take a pattern and copy it to a bank.. i THINK the manual is TRYING to tell me how to do it and i get to the last step to load it to a pad and i can get it to copy to a specific place... its the backup copy paste thing i wanna say it was on page 40ish.. right now the easiest way ive found to do it is play the sample into my mini disk and then sample off of the mini disk and trunecate(spellcheck).. its kind of almost just as much work to do that as it is to rebuild the patterns ive been building and add to them. i would have thought the resample button would have been used more than it has (seems like a strong word for that button) then again i STILL havent dug too deep into my sp although im 10 fold times better than the last time i POSTED on here but i lurk multiple times a day..
and yes i know of the search feature.. but when you type in the words "sample" "pattern" and "pad" you can only imagine the posts that come up..
comments and or help would be awesome and ill buy you a cookie or something..

This video on YouTube will show you how to copy patterns on the SP-404. The same technique can be used for copying samples, too.

a couple notes to the original poster...
if you haven't already done so, read the manual. the whole thing, not just the part you need info about. not trying to be insulting but it really helps make sense of the workflow.
you know you can move samples around really easy right?
the 404 is pretty much the most simple sampler out there, so i'd make sure i had a good grasp on it before moving on to another one.
that's cool you got a cheap tt. even if you can't scratch on it you can now get your samples from vinyl.
good luck!

yea like i said ive been trying to either find stuff in the manual or by using the search function on this site.. and for the first few weeks i had my machine i brought my manual to work and read it at lunch. sometimes the way instructions are written arent very clear.. or dont make as much sense as someone giving you points on something youve almost got.
i wasnt trying to move a sample (which i can do) i was trying to move a pattern to pad AS a sample.. and i was misunderstanding a part in the manual.. what someone else suggested will probably be better than what i was trying to do..
thanks for the help yet again loparxl you always bring it...

yeah i think someone else mentioned this but there's no easy way to turn a pattern into a sample. you'd have to record it into another machine then sample it back in. maybe a portable recorder like the zoom h4 would be appropriate for your workflow. and yeah, for some reason there's no easy way to copy patterns, just the flying lotus trick. these limitations are the rattan stick your master strikes you with in the temple of beat fu. from your welts will rise your funkiest creations. accept them with a smile.

pretty much as IG says - but....
you said you DO have a mini-disc recorder?
that's the quickest answer to the question of converting a pattern to a sample for you -
play it out to yr minidisc thru the OUTS
then pump that back in the 404's INs -
but i wouldn't advise using the 404 to monitor the recording into yr minidisc or yu may make one hell of a feedback loop.
you will find yr minidisc sits very well in yr workflow - once you get more comfortable with the 404.

By the way, timfromtexas, have you ever visited minidisc.org or Audio T-Board? Those are two info resources/hang outs for us MiniDisc users. What model MD recorder do you have? The Hi-MD ones can have their recordings uploaded to your PC or Mac.

yo folks, (newbie i'm a) now that i hear you all explaining that patterns cannot be saved as samples, not directly at least. Im gonna exptrapolate from that, that effects cannot be applied to patterns. Correct? there's no point in asking why but can somebody clarify for me that no effects, except vinyl sim, can be applied to the drum samples that come with the machine? I ve been so eager to start practicing making beats that i have been working with the drum samples that are included, but man they just aint loose enough! its too bad that one cant throw some reverb on the bass drum or some phaser on the crash . . . or am i not missing something . . .
`yo IG9 so waht is the flying lotus trick to copying patterns . . . uuh i feel kinda lame asking . . .
to mostblunted ive had my 404 for a month now and i have a totally new respect for dilla, madlib and many other cats . . .
these forums are awesome, great to have found you all.

^ you can put any effects onto any sample in the box
you might have the A Bank 'locked' which could be stopping you
check the manual on how to Unlock that bank
hope that fixes it
also: flying lotus trick = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5q90OmW7EQ
practice it, 'cos you'll need it and soon you'll be able to do it from memory
it's the best way of building up beats and creating alternative sections etc

effects can be applied to patterns - yes - the same effect can be applied to just one or a number of samples in a pattern - check yr manual on how to do this
effects can't be "saved" to a pattern or to any number of samples in a pattern -
to do that for a pattern - "save" the effects - you would need to record out the effected PATTERN to something like tape recorder, comp, whatever - tim can now use his minidisk - or 2 of them! - and then pump that back in and sample that as one entire sample. and free up yr polyphony.
to "save" effects for a sample - like a drum beat you would need to re-sample the effected sample to another vacant bank/pad.
sometimes just swapping back and forth between effected/uneffected sample in a similar pattern is enough to signal to a listener a change in the song structure.
sit and listen to the battles - and try to figure out how to reverse engineer what those guys do.
there used to be a cool youtube vid by alias of antioch(?) - he was using an mpc but it still works - resample simultaneous strikes of an effected kick and hihat and then an effected snare and hihat -
if they had been effected to make them stand out from the normal kicks and snares those 2 new single resamples work really cool as yr 1 and 3 for kicks and yr 2 and 4 for snares...
knock yr uneffected snares around those and see the difference to yr beat already.
best of luck - and don't forget the manual, it's always worth re-reading as you learn more of yr machine.

yo thanks drewzie and bishojo_command for the tips, i figured out how to turn on the effects for the factory samples.
However, i still cant turn on effects when im playing patterns, im looking at the manual/ ch.2 using effects and the first step for all the instructions says: make sure that [pattern select] is not lighted. ! but its cool im over it, i got waht yr saying bishojo_command, about adding effects to the individual samples during pattern making.
its interesting that you mentioned battles, im interested in checking out the album since i only know a few tracks. . .
man, i miss my minidisc! after 9+ years my sonymz-r50 died a year ago and i bought that thing refurbished!!!
anyhow, back to the lab . . . peace to you all . . .
