creating synth sounds

I've been doing a ton of online research to find out what kind of hardware I want to get next. I've hooked up my MIDI controller keyboard to the 404 once or twice in the past, and it seemed like all you could do was play each individual sample across the keys (which is cool, for velocity changes, etc...)

But here's what I'm wondering.... is there a way to take just ONE sample and map it across the entire keyboard (with proper pitch changes, C, C#, D, etc.) thereby creating an actual synth to play chords.. all from one sample??

If so, I will be using the 404 in a whole new way. I have a feeling it can't be done, but I'm praying that it can...

I'm planning on getting a MIDI keyboard as well but I'd rather use it with a software synthie like the thousands of VST plugins that you can find on the web for free but I couldn't quite think of an other good method to use it.

i think i asked this or a similar question in "other gear" and i believe it was frantic who posted this keyboard that does just that, i forget the specifics as i never ended up buying the keyboard yet but look it up, the keyboard looked awesome

i am pretty sure that the 404 does not support mapping. but some of the midi superheroes on the forum may have the definitive answer.

Im pretty sure that my keyboard (roland juno-g) does what you are talking about but i have never tried it.

I dont see anyway that the 404 could do that unless you pitch shifted all the samples on the computer and then mapped them out of the 404 but that would take a lot of time.

I have used my 404 with my MIDI synthesizer, and the 404 does not map out the samples as you said. The 505, however, does. You just need to select the sample then hit the pitch key and follow through. The 606 and tripple-5 can do this via the include software for your PC, though.

i know its not really what you're asking, and probably covered better elsewhere, but i bought our sp-404 three days ago and have since been going through softsynths (m-tron, eastwest orchestra etc) that i want to play live (without laptop) or tweak with 404 fx...then in sonar recording long samples of each note, playing 24 notes covering 2 octaves, exporting as a wave file and then just cutting it in adobe audition (automatically finds the notes and selects individually) and importing all to 404 via memory card in 2 banks. works great and only takes about 20 minutes per synth. i just did one with three different moogs and fx on top of each other for a lead synth line and it sounds sick. not as quick as what you're talking about but probably more scope for tweaking and having more control/creativity over the base sounds.....
