i can use any midi channel from 1 to 15, but to
use all pads the pk needs the next channel too.

Okay, it's not clicking right now for me..

If you use channel 10 on the Sp404.. The Pk can be on Scene 1 but the individual pads needs to be on midi channel 10..

However you can set up the Korg PadKontrol (PK) to trigger only note numbers. So by that the PK pads has nothing to do with any midi channel.. This way you can trigger samples/notes from other midi devices..

For example.. you have the Sp404, you can trigger the Sp samples on scene 1 pads 1-8 and then on Scene 1 pads 9-16 you can trigger your Roland fantom for synth sounds at the same time..

I wanna stop here, am I on the same page as you are? Or am I drifting off into something else?

i'll do my best! drewzle could probably explain better.
so there are twelve pads and they are triggered by note scale i.e. pad 1 c, pad 2 c#, pad 3 d,...pad 12 h. ok so i use midi channel one. the two internal banks plus the front four memory card banks go up the scale. for the back four mem banks it's the same as the front four but midi channel +1.
this confused me at first but then, thanks to drewzle, i realized that the pk has to be programmed on channel two for the back four banks but the 404 stays on channel one. sorry, about the rough description; i'm kinda a noob to midi.

Yes, can be triggered by note scale/numbers or Control Change Messages..
