sample input level on 404

whats up all. just wondering when u sample do u usually have the peak level input knob cranked all the way up?? it seems that is the only way to get the peak light to come on occasionally. it seems as though my samples are coming out distorted even if the peak doesnt light up?? thanks for any help. peace[/i]
