alright, this is the last moronic question i have that i should already know the answer to-

for those that sample a lot of soul/jazz/rock stuff and dont tweak the sounds out in a major way-whats the best way to eq the samples?i mean i know sometimes it can be a judgement call...but say you have something with a pretty ill bassline already in it-is it better to still take out most of the lows and play your own bass over it,or do the opposite and just boost the lows up..and if you do boost the lows-is it best to use the eq effect, issolater,or both?or maybe layer an isolated bass sample with its lows-stripped counterpart? and if you do just you boost the lows up a whole lot, where should you have your mids and highs set at?
lastly,do most of you eq EVERY sample you use before you do anything with it,either with a seperate eq or in the machine?
simple questions,i know..i'm just really trying to focus on getting my sound quality where it needs to be.
any advice or details of your process would be more than appreciated,thanks...1

Just do what sounds best to you man. It's ALL judgement calls. There's no textbook method of sampling, and if there was it would be outdated 10 minutes after print.

again- i fully realize that..to a certain extent-im just asking what a few peoples normal approach would be when flipping something that has some decent bass already in it..and of course those approaches could be completely different from each other-im just trying to gauge what im doing compared to some other cats that have more knowledge in the technical aspect of things.im not asking for textbook definitions, because obviously there are none, and shouldnt be.-and trust me,i'm not just some novice trying to tap other peoples shit..just looking for different angles of what works best for people...thanks

if you're playing a bass line underneath it, cut the lows completely so your bassline frequencies have room to dance

if you're going to use the bassline as yours, low end theory it and cut the highs and mids, resample that, then maybe add another filter as well. Then make a copy of the original with the lows cut and play them both together. You should probably quantize that, or just have your low ended loop playing and play chops over that that have been eq'd with the lows out.

The thing with your PT01 is that it has some low end rumble from the belt drive and other crap (every record player has this) so if you don't cut those it's going to get muddy.

General rule, and I've told you this before, you just don't listen or some shit is that you have to have room for all your sounds to interact and do their thing in their own frequency range.

for a hi hat you need to cut lows for sure, probably mids depending on the sound.

kick would be mostly using mid frequencies depending on your other elements of the track, if you don't have a bassline you might need to boost the lows etc.

but like dude said above, do what sounds good to you, you're putting the pussy on a pedestal

The Isolator is generally better for "chipping" away at frequencies.

[Ed note: "fast" and "slow" in the context I'm about to use them have to do with how steep a curve is, nothing to do with actual time or speed]

The EQ has a little more "curve" or "sloping" to it, it affects the specified frequency a little "slower" than the Isolator. Also, there's a little bleed in effect across the three main parts of the freq spectrum (the 3 knobs). What I mean by this is that boosting the mids enough will slightly boost the edge freqs that the low and hi knobs control.

The Isolator is just what it says, it treats the freq spectrum as if it's 3 separate blocks: one chunk of low, chunk of mid, chunk of hi. Each knob affects the gain (volume, essentially, but not quite) of only it's designated spectrum totally and pretty drastically. Almost no curve to the sound. Also, the Isolator allows you to completely "kill" freqs in a specific part of the spectrum. The EQ will let you turn the highs way down, whereas the Isolator will let you kill the highs completely (this is sometimes referred to as a "killswitch")
