The Chief called the crew into the office. We’d been away too long. 
The night the rain stitched the city back together was the night we figured out what we didn’t want to learn.

Seven of us sat in the briefing room, coats still on and collars turned up like our guard. Photos of the scene shot by Officer Sleeps were spread across the table. Sam Pull lay there in black and white, his blank stare giving up nothing. In the corner sat the six crates of missing tapes sat stacked like bad alibis.

We all had something. Together, we had nothing.

Seven versions of the truth hit the table, and every one of them pointed inward. The circle was closing slow and tight like a noose that enjoyed its work.

Someone had lied early. Not sloppy. Not loud. Clean. A falsified timestamp? A shifted location? Sending me to the pawnbroker when the crates were already tagged?

Whatever it was, it bent the case just enough that it never snapped back straight.

That’s when their name crawled back into my head. The Espee family. Copyright crims with long memories and short fuses. Looks like they’d finally bought themselves a badge. I should’ve known this day was coming.

Whoever did it had been counting on procedure to keep them clean. Forms filed. Boxes checked. Blind trust doing the heavy lifting.

No one spoke. We just stared at each other, counting breaths and counting sins. Outside the city hummed. Wet, tired, and indifferent. Somewhere in the room sat a murderer with a badge and a good reason, and six lawmen who could almost prove it. Almost.

In my pocket Carmen’s tarot deck pressed against my thigh. Same size and weight as my smokes. I was getting desperate. Reading signs where there were only shadows. Paranoia was kicking in, hard.

Looks like we’re gonna have to settle it the old way.

Point fingers and see which one flinches.

Was it me or was everything a little bit more hi-fi and varied this time around? As usual, with such a large cache, it's hard to know if owt clever or interesting was done but...

Chopper - probs the most original perp on the forum. Just a loop here tho? It's a beat battle, not a rap battle! Enjoyable nonetheless. Jon Lajoie vibes.

Asha C - literal LOLZ for the first section. When that w&f kicks in...oh my days! Last 2 sections were propa bo.

Ishambi - loved the samples but generally hate that style of drums - boom bap snare "rolls" put my teeth on edge. However, the rest of the track was awesome, so it was for you that I voted. Just a shame I can't listen to it!

UJFR - standard fare.

Unfolding - sounded great. First bit was a fave but was a bit too repetitive to clinch it.

Kudos - last section was nice. A bit unnecessarily noisy tho.

Sleepzzzzzzzz - standard fare.

Officer Sleeps was most on-theme, Isihambi was most elegant, but Uncle Jess was most bloodlusty. what started as a lone hit on the late Sam Pull became a veritable collective BL00D BATH with that brilliantly sequenced conclusion. who hurt you? could they maybe please do it again? if this is "standard fare," then the standard couldn't possibly be for mortals. KUDOS

Just usual unnecessary lo-fi. No roundness or warmth. You have a 404 - the idea that you purposefully take steps to make what you've done sound worse than it needs to is hilarious to me.
