Thanks for the poll, Sleeps!

Voted Asha because that would legit fit in a Christmas playlist & not cause mass stank faces.

Still really liked the mini beat tapes by U_J_F_R & Sleeps. Those are the parties I wanna be at - where the greasy weirdos & heshers cut sick & the beats are as loose as the turkey is raw.

Voted unfolding. Enjoyed the industrial beat and how the glitchy video game melody complimented it! I really liked the sort of clicky rhythm on the outro around the 2:12 mark! I think theres definitely something there that could be explored for a whole new track!

I voted Asha because I enjoy those, apparently outdated, concepts such as structure, rhythm, melody, harmony and some semblance of clarity with my music, as opposed to the sound of 3 SP202s being simultaneously thrown down a long flight of stairs.

I miss when it at least sounded like people made an effort to make something coherent in these things. 90% of entries being "microwave", with no discernible difference between them, is just getting too much. I seriously don't understand how you even begin to judge one against another. What are the criteria?

I know what you mean man! It can be difficult to vote sometimes when there are a lot of similar entries! I miss the straight boom bappy type beats! Ots good to see variation, get in on the next one MITT!!!

I get where you’re coming from, MITS, it can be a tough job listening to a bunch of similar entries, especially if they’re not your vibe.

If you’ve still got your 303, jump on the next round, nobody’s stopping you. When you get your SP-1200 back submit some proper songs or some Pete Rock-style smoothness with it. I’d vote for either.

But I reckon a lot of the loose beat tape entries result from having such massive sample packs of incomplete songs. Like if there’s so much material provided of course heads are gonna mine it & not spend as long refining the best bits. To work the leftovers angle - we’re gluttons, not gourmands.

Mind if we try a limited palette for the next battle? Something like:
- 3 whole songs (2 in key + 1 out of key but at the same tempo as an in key song).
- 1 breakbeat or drum pack.
- BYO a capellas & instruments.

That might be a good way to keep us focussed on making beats that’re easier on the ear.

thought unfolding won this one handily. mitt reveals his lack of imagination every time he clucks. he should be paying jesse for lessons on “rhythm”

@ASHA/MITT ~ ITS OBVIOUSLY NOT THE LENGTH OF THE TAPES, OR THAT PEEPS ARE REGURGITATING THE SAME CONTENT UTILIZING THE SAME SAMPLES. BECAUSE I HARDLY EVER HEAR PEEPS USING THE SAME SAMPLES IN A REPETITIVE BORING WAY, ITS ALL A SUBJECTIVE ART THING IMO, YOU DONT DIG THE SOUND THE GENRE I GUESS. I THINK ONE THING THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE SECRET SAUCE TO THIS PLACE IS HOW ALL STYLES EXIST IN A MUTUALLY RESPECTED WAY.

WHILE I WOULD EXPECT IT FROM MITT (WHOS GOT A LOT OF TALK FOR SOMEONE THAT DIDNT EVEN CONTRIBUTE TO THIS BATTLE TO MAKE HIS BOOM BAP DREAMS A REALITY), I THOUGHT AT LEAST ASHA WOULD UNDERSTAND THE HISTORY OF THIS FORUM. THE GENRE YALL TAKING TURNS TRASHING IS SINGLEHANDEDLY A PRODUCT OF THIS FORUM.

IT MAKES ME WONDER WHAT YALL THINK OF CLASSIC ALBUMS FROM THIS FORUM AND THE OVERALL BEAT SCENE? LIKE TO YALL APPRECIATE THE WORKS OF DONUTS, DELOFI, OHBLIV, CULP'S MARINELAND, BEATJITZU, EL SERENO CATS, DON GOLDMAN, TWIN GALAXY, INFOMERCIALS, BUN, SELFISH. ETC. LIKE WHATS THE CUTOFF? WERE NOT SINGER SONGWRITERS HERE, WE MAKE BEATS. LIKE SOME OF US PREFER A MORE EXPERIMENTAL SOUND, PUSHING BOUNDARIES, TRYING TO COME UP WITH NEW SOUNDS RATHER THAN CHASING THE OLD MOLD RULEBOOK TRYING TO MAKE THE SOUNDTRACK TO CAR COMMERCIALS.

YOU CAN CHANGE THE CONTENT, THE FORMAT, BUT WHAT YOU REALLY ADVOCATING FOR IS FOR US TO CHANGE OUR SOUND??? LIKE IF YOU CANT HEAR THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A KUDOS, ROR,UJFR, RAW BROS BEAT MAYBE I SHOULD STOP WORRYING ABOUT YALL OPINIONS

IF YOU WANT MORE CLASSIC KRUSH ERA BOOM BAP BEATS WHY DONT YOU HIT UP SOME OF YOUR FRIENDS?

MicrophonesInt'Trees wrote:Voted Gis and Sleepy. Sleepy's was one of my most fave ever beat battle beats, I reckon (WakingLife, at least - wouldn't have missed Chevy if it wasn't there), especially the parts that sound like it's saying "Goodbye" thruout and at the end.
GUESS YOU FELL OUT OF LOVE WITH THE SOUND ;(

DID YOU SELL YOUR 303 ALREADY OR WHAT

Boom bap? You guys make that? Where can I find it.
Haven’t heard it? Since you’re critics, ya’ll sound like some dJshadow YouTube type beat makers and you probably take that as a compliment. You should
My guy(s) I like your beats. Truly. They are refined and all that but if they weren’t tagged with your names.. I wouldn’t know the difference.
Don’t get me wrong, I really think you’re talented fellas.
Would I sit down in a room with you for a conversation, of course.
But I would never hang out for the cook up. I’m too antifi, a terrorist, rule breaker.. right right !? ?! Throw bricks and dip out without watching where they land - type of bad character to some.

I’m not trying to run a long distance race or make anything for your ears other than keeping your requests in mind for sample pack hosting.
We have different goal posts. we’re talking practice here.

Voted folding
Scramble egged the samples into something palatable after the turkey turned to soup broth
Really liked the transitions between tracks. I detected very little to no XMas sounds. This made it listenable into the 26
PLUS u have an idea for the next battle

Also—-team battle might have to happen before mitts sells his golden hen 303 and beats it off for 1 last time.

Its not a criticism i made, I aint claiming to be a critic! just my opinion and observation. I’m all for experimentation, if you have a look on my bandcamp, theres noise, ambient, beat stuff, industrial, hell even a bit of folk and country but what I always like about experimental music is texture and feeling, what it evokes in terms of imagery and I personally struggle to hear that in a lot of these beats, again not a criticism, just my opinion.

No i dont make boom bap but I do remember a lot of people did back when I first joined this forum and that’s what I like hearing, whilst I also enjoy making DJ shadow type stuff. You’re right for me that is a massive compliment.

Maybe we all need to get out the comfort zones…MITT tried the microwave a while ago and did a pretty good job with it, maybe you guys could have a bash at the generic dj shadow type stuff you cant tell the difference between! I dont think its rule breaking or pushing our own boundaries if we’re not stepping out the comfort zones. Sounds like a potential battle….make a beat in the style of another SP user!

Y'all are right, I'm sorry. The Microwave Mafia are ACTUALLY visionary renegades, flying to the very edge of creation itself. If you see a boundary, you eat a boundary and wash it down with a hot steaming cup of beat-making rules. And microwave stuff DOESN'T at all sound like four SP202s on Lo-Fi 2 mode DVDAing a Bulgarian tape deck from 1974 with flat Type Cs and a Type 0 cassette against its will.

Peas, out. See y'all in Greenland!
Up yer bumz.

I don’t know why you’re being salty. this isn’t the WBA, it’s Fight Club here and UJFR is Tyler Durden!
The Arena is for breaking stuff, not polishing trophies. practice your shit (whatever that sounds like), enjoy the sample packs (from the slums of youtube), like/find inspiration — or not — in other competitors’ beats: their mix, rhythm, mood, whatever.

If it were the WBA, I’d already be Mike Tyson with numerous titles, a lisp but no belt left.

Call this place Sandbox, Project Mayhem, whatever helps you sleep and drop a beat here. But maybe you re just not in the right section?
And should go to music/production tech or just make a split tape with Asha C & share it. That part might actually be productive and people here would listen, show some love and if not fuck it. Make Sp-Forums Great Again! can t find the right orzange pantone.

Oh wait maybe u just want to add some spices and flavors by being the bad guy here?
Like we say on this side of the Channel, You re pissing in a violin. And I don' t mean to shoot the pianist (another local expression)

BTW HAVE NOT RECEIVED MY SAMPLE PACK FOR CHISTMAS YET, SO PLEASE WINNER OR ELSE SEND THIS SHIT QUICK!

Haha!! LOVE the ‘pissing in a violin’ phrase, never heard that! I wholeheartedly agree, this place should be a positive one, afterall, we’re all here for the same machines! It would be really boring if we all made the same kindve stuff, I just agreed that it can be difficult to choose when there are a lot of similar entries, not ‘thrashing’ a genre! For me as long as people enjoy the process that’s all that matters…kindve like a therapy!
