SP fam! It’s been a minute since logins. Stoked to see the forum’s still going & weirded out that the forum’s beat tape 6 is still stickied all these years later.
Here’s what I’ve been up to over the past few months:
New old tapes and MP3s
11 tracks in about. 20 minutes. Loads of breaks & noise.
Been away but not out the lab

Sweet! Great stuff! So great to see you back! Really enjoyed listening to the beats!nice variety but consistent, recognisable sound! Dancey yet also kind of industrial!
Is this all samples or some synths too? Did i read on another thread you got the 404 mk2? Thanks for sharing!

Re: Been away but not out the lab
Thanks dude! It’s good to be back!
This thing’s almost all synths & sampled breakbeats. The only track with actual sample flips starts at 5:40, but that was a pretty basic chop. Also did a bit of sampling my synths for textures & background noise.
The samplers used on this were the KP3, SP404mk2 & Digitakt 1. Still got the 606, 404SX & Electribe SX, I’ll never part with them. Just need more desk space to bring them back.
TBH I reckon the workflow of the SX & OG is better than the mk2. I also prefer the effects & sequencers in the old SPs. Where the mk2’s better is integrating with Koala Sampler, trimming, mute groups & the skip back recording. DJ mode is a bit of fun too.
Got the consistent sound by arranging the tracks then playing them through some outboard gear then running those into a hifi cassette deck’s preamp in one go. Worked better than expected!
Only problem was I left the compressor’s release too long on the last track & ruined the bassline in it. That was the most industrial-ish part too *facepalm*. Keen to do more tracks like that & get the mix/vibe right. Def need to set new references for how to record to cassette with all that saturation - what it does to bass is killer.
