DEAR SP FORUMS ADMINISTRATORS - ARE YOU ALIVE?

Post by ¥€₦ »

Posting this here as it's own thread so hopefully it gets the attention of the site admins.

This is a message for the admins of the site. Myself and a few others are aware of a lot of people who have tried to sign up for the site but have been unable to get their account approved.

I know there was an issue with spam bots (and still is judging by the increase in active users recently) but is there any way to have some of the mods/users who ARE still regulars here to be given administrative privileges so that they can approve genuine users?

Also worth nothing here aswell that the site has reached it's attachment limit. Can this be reset or increased at all?

We are sailing on a ghost ship my friend. Anything can happen or not.

I'm just a mod, but i try to get in touch with the admins.

We are alive. Thanks for asking. Life priorities have shifted away from SP Forums for me personally.

I still try my best to keep the site running for as long as possible, but I can't afford putting substantial time into it.

I'd rather err on the side of keeping things operating as is for the current members, rather than risking creating more problems that could put the full site at stake for everyone. For example, making signups open to all could invite spambots (like it did in the past), granting admin privileges to someone we don't know could cause even more issues, etc.

I'll have a look if I can re-enable the forums' email functionality. I think this will go a long way into solving some of the issues as it would allow for password reset emails etc.

RE: maintenance - if cost is the issue there's a lot of us who would be happy to contribute to help keep the ship afloat.

RE: Spambots, is it not possible or feasible to implement a Cloudfare Captcha somewhere in the registration process?

RE: admin privileges - this is totally understandable. but surely there is someone that could be considered trusted from the current mod team (TGN for example maybe?) to handle this?

good to see you still kicking it and thanks for replying!

Re: Maintenance – Cost isn't really the issue, but time is. The site is too small to hire someone to delegate things to, and my own time is limited due to other priorities.

Re: Spambots – Unfortunately these captcha's can be quite easily circumvented these days. I'm not sure if we're a big enough target for spammers to put in the extra resources for that, so we COULD try that. For now, I've configured extra protection for the WHOLE site because the server was getting hammered by bots leading to the recent downtime.

Re: Admin privileges – The issue with granting admin privileges is that it gives full access to everyone's email addresses, etc. It's A LOT of power. Even if we trust the individual, we'd ALSO need to trust they practice good security hygiene so their account doesn't get compromised etc.

I was able to re-enable emails, which means password reset emails etc are going out again. This should help solve many issues. We, the admins, also start receiving "new signup" emails again which allows us to manually activate new users. I'll talk to @chulukinat (my brother, the other admin), if that's something he's willing to dedicate some time to as I believe he's more active in the forums than me.
