Since it's basically the first SP, being the prototype for the SP202 as it basically was, and since it's basic af, should it?

I'm biased but in order to keep the 'battles' interesting there should be less stringent limits.

I think if your primary samples are simply processed by a sampler/machine they should be allowed. Roland whatever needs to be in the chain tho.
I don't think it should turn into open fruuty loop battles but, it's always nice to hear some other equipment used.

Didn't there used to be open battles at some point?

P6 MS-1.. even sampletrak or micro sampler, es1, volca sampler, k0ala, etc.
I know it's a die hard SP only 4reelz forum but other gear keeps it interesting and may provide more participation/contribution

Nah. All machines used have at least gotta be in the Roland lineage, I reckon. The MS-1 begat the 202 which begat the 303 which begat the 404 which begat the SX. Then there was the MkII, which is a fancy sampler but in the SP form factor. And now there's the P-6 which isn't in the SP form factor but is obviously derived from the mid-period ones.

I suppose the specifics will be down to each person setting the comp.

I agree UJFR.

All those pieces have been a big part of the culture too! Plus let’s get this fucking this going with as many entries as we can! I voted yes for both!

In the old days of beatbattles, the rules were very strict. But I think we can open the boundaries up to a certain point. So I think MS-1, yes of course.

But I have doubts when it comes to samplers that rely heavily on X0X-style sequencing, like the Digitakt, Volca Sample and ES1. Hmm, but that would also apply to the P6, although it is quite similar to the SP series.

What do you think about this? Am i too conservative?

I think in the end the question of allowed samplers should be answered anew for each beatbattle and is up to the respective host.

Agree. Altho, never mind the type of sequencer - I think you gotta keep it Roland SP lineage. MS-1, SPs, P-6.
Hell, I even think the MkII should be banned for being too much like a 'normal' modern sampler and being too fancy, lol - the only thing that's SP about it seems to be the vertical-ness.

Banning MKII users is hilarious
Sounding like an old head

I DO think MKII should be included
It might bring some life back into the forum with new users.. maybe..

My tongue was somewhat firmly in cheek when I wrote that. Altho I think you could see what I'd be getting at...lol. I haven't used one but I can't see that they've got much in common with what went before beyond the layout. But, no, I wasn't serious.

If anything, I've noticed that the people who used to enter the comps a lot have all dropped off since getting their MkIIs. Too busy mucking about with all those options instead getting on wit' making tunes, lol. And, as for new users...altho the MkII does seem to be selling well, there doesn't seem to be anything like the culture surrounding it like there was the SX.
