Yamaha QY100??

anybody have details on this machine??

my 404 is perfect it's just the sequencer stops me from getting into complex tracks.

i don't understand how this yamaha works though. i don't have a multitrack recording program. i just record everything to tape directly. live.

like do i sample the sounds into this machine and then i can do the sequencing in the machine??

i think im being extremely stupid here by asking this but im totally clueless when it comes to external sequencing devices.

i have the QY-70, and i imagine it and the 100 are quite similar

using the QY-70, you can enter MIDI notes which trigger events in the 404.
the QY is effectively controlling the 404. the 404 is not in Pattern Mode, it is just receiving MIDI info from the QY (you set your BPM in the QY, which sends out the note info to the 404 as to when to play which pad)

using the QY as a sequencer for the 404 effectively gives you an MPC style MIDI arranger that sits just outside the 404, so when you want that level of control you can use it, but if you just want to bang around SP style, you use the 404 alone.

you can copy/paste all your MIDI data in the QY, so building up tracks, joining patterns together, making variations etc etc is all possible (which on the 404 by itself is definitely not!)

to be clear: hitting the pads on the QY triggers the sounds in the 404. so when you record a sequence in the QY, you're recording MIDI info which the 404 reads. then you can edit it on the screen, delete a wrong note, copy a drum pattern by itself with the sample chops on another channel

just 1 more question. from reading your post i think i have an idea of what the machine does but i just want to make a few things clear.

so lets this is my set-up

i have my drums on pads 1-4
my bass notes on 5-8
and lead on 9-12

it is possible to program the drums to play through 8 bars and then have the bass and the lead drop in and then if i want to add the bass at say the 9th bar and then the lead later on. if i program all the MIDI notes in the QY this is possible?

the QY also has a number of swing/quantize options that the SP lacks, which can help add a little shuffle to the mix.

^ the pK goes into the QY, which goes into the SP

that way, the QY can record the MIDI info sent by the pK (with velocity sensitivity, rather than the fixed-velocity keys the QY has) which gets stored and then triggers the SP.

the great thing is that there's all those extra channels in the QY (with thousands of fantastic instruments to use), so you can perform a bassline within the QY to go along with whatever the SP's pads are playing. sometimes i'll then sample that bassline loop into the SP to be triggered with the rest of the pads, or just record it all out at the same time.

i should mention that i route the audio output of the QY into the Ext Source of the SP, so it is essentially all very integrated...3 different pieces of gear sharing their strengths, forming like Voltron!! then they can split away and do function by themselves too

Hi cool that you rememberd me man! Although the name was a little off:P
The qy70/100 + a sp is a killer combo. A have been doing a lot of music on my laptop now for some time but i must prop the qy/404 setup!

The internal sound of a qy + some sp efx sounds realy great plus everything is really easy to figure out. you can sample the qy you can program patterns and whole songs on the qy or both.

plus i saw that you like to add some live tweaking and recording live into a tape machine? well that's one thing that works great with this setup! 'cos whatever the qy is sequenseing on your sp you can still rock the sp pads in realtime.
