Problem is there's nothing remotely 'complex' whatsoever about that particular drum pattern in the first place though...

I get why he's saying there's nothing complex about that particular drum pattern. You really only just using two fingers. As the video explain your dominant hand is continually drumming the hi hat. And then it's just a single kick and a single snare played off of each other. Nothing layered or anything.

You could make the pattern even more simpler by looping the hi hat.

But yeah that's a pretty simple drum pattern.
