Recently discovered the “York” record by Blu (which I was late to by like 9 years haha). I’m assuming a lot of u guys heard it? Pretty good find, rlly digged it

Second that! Muggs has been on a roll lately.
Not new but I loved the shit out of ‘Grandmasters’, the collab with GZA from ‘05. Great beats throughout and some great sample work.

Also the latest Lil Ugly Mane album ‘volcanic bird enemy and the voiced concern’. Whether you’re about the hype and his previous work or not, it’s a pretty fascinating listen, emotional too.

Been listening to this Claudio Simonetti track quite a lot for some time now. I love the sound and feel of it, classy and smooth, very 80s and the overall sound always reminds me of the Roland JX-8P even though I'm not sure if it is one.

it's strange to me to listen to this seeing that he is one of the former of the glorious 70s prog-rock band Goblin from Italy (Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebrae ,well this last one in very 80s sounding); maybe this track is a bit too smooth for me but i also know that he also made tracks like that in the 80s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6NLQrh4Hwk, that was the period...italo-disco, moroder, etc
in any case this track could be written today in a sort of glow pop style (it is yet glow pop) and it would be considered as sorted today:)) that's strange and ironical all of this

Aye, I think he has the 80s permanently running through him, it would definitely pass as being written and recorded in the 80s that one!

The title song from Tenebrae is definitely one of my fave's of theirs, in fact I came across Goblin due to being a Dario Argento fan. I was pretty much brought up on Argento movies and loving what he does, and Tenebrae is definitely one of the best, most stylish Giallo I've ever seen, absolute masterpiece! The cinematography in that one is especially gorgeous to the point where whenever I watch it, I am often talking to myself in my head, saying stuff like "God, just look at that, the composition and angle, that's absolute class that is, that's bloody nice!".

i'm most fan of 70s Argento, my preferred one is Deep Red, the real beginning of combining thriller and some gore/psycho stuff in a Giallo-style perspective, but some out of place elements (the detectives wich aren't real detectives, the serial killer is not typical one, the aggressive prog rock, the gore elements, the childish trauma etc) make this film a milestone, a sort of a revolution for the genre (and for cinema in general). Some of his first movies (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o' Nine Tails etc) contained some of those elements yet, but Deep Red condenses all of those in a new different light. It seems that Argento contacted the rock band Deep Purple to make the score of the film but then the choice came to simonetti's & co
then Argento made Suspiria wich most consider his masterpiece; it's different from the Giallo/trhiller, it's about witches but with Argento eys, it's the beginning of a magical trilogy (the second is Inferno and, the thrid is Tenebrae)...
Tenebrae is most soft-rock/italo disco score, well, the prog rock time was ended in the end of 70s but most of the porg rocker recycled them selves with disco and electronic sounds, very influenced by moroder and brian eno on the other hand.
Tenebrae is more stylish, typical 80s film, but i still like it. It still conserves some Argento touches. I still remember the poster outside the cinemas when it came out, back in thos crazy days...but it was forbidden to minors at the time

I had to look-up Mario Bava, I thought I'd heard the name before but wasn't sure. His films are before the decades I'm into. The 70s and 80s were the golden age for Giallo in my opinion, although there are quite a few more modern releases I've not seen yet that look interesting.

Suspiria just looks stunning in it's own right. I prefer Tenebrae though, I really dig the effort he went to choose the right sort of characters, dress them a certain style, and shoot the movie in a certain style, it all just works together and looks super-stylish and very slick - love it!

BTW, regards Goblin and the Tenebrae soundtrack, the extended release actually features Argento on the cover art posing with Goblin. You kinda know they've got a solid appreciation of each others talent when that happens.

I intentionally mentioned him because he is an influence on Argento's films.
Check A Bay of Blood (1971),Rabid Dogs (1974) and Shock (1977) then: the '71 one is a strange variant of zombie movie/pandemy sort of.
Rabid Dogs is a kidnapping violent road movie. Not his common style but nice.
Schock , his last movie, is a psychological thriller, very claustrofobic atmposphere. The OST is from a last italian prog rock band, Libra. Not far from Simonetti's Goblins Prog.
But i cannot not to mention his origins with Black Sabbath (1963) with the great last boris karloff inside and a 3 parts tales about vampyr, a witch and soft-erotic thrills. Maybe the Heavy Metal Band took its name from this movie? Who knows...
the greatness of Bava was mostly his lights and photograpy and the general atmosphere (check his '68 pop film Diabolik too, this is where Beastie Boys video Body Movin came from); seen that you're interested in photos, check them;)

Ah right, so it must be "A Bay of Blood" where I'd heard the name before cause I've seen that one. Wasn't aware he was an influence on Argento though, and yes, I can totally see similarities in style some of those trailers. Since he produced stuff in the 70s as well, I'll defiitely take a look at those movies although I'm generally not a fan of 60s stuff (with exceptions of course).

That reminds me, I have a link to post although I'll post it in the other thread cause it's starting to look as if we've hijacked this one!
