Separate computers for music & internet

How many people are recording music on the same computer they're reading this bulletin on?

I'm a huge proponent of having a completely separate computer for recording and another one for net-

Before you cry "$$$"- It's not that much more if you buy right.
A cheap Dell or HP desktop will run ProTools, etc.. JUST FINE as long as you check the motherboard specs against what platform you plan to use.

This becomes especially important if you are being paid or relied on by someone for their soul (their music/vocals on "tape") recorded.

I use a very reliable anti-virus program called Kaspersky and a complicated back-up system with multiple hard disks to make sure I don't lose data recorded. I always record to a PC that's also connected to the web.

Don't have enough money to buy another computer to have all this fully separated, but I definitely agree with your point. It's saver to have a PC not connected to the web at all for sure.

Perhaps one day I might buy a nice Macbook Pro, but those are far far far too expensive for me at the moment. An MV-8800 is cheaper... :p

wurd on kapersky. way better than most anti-virus programs.

we just did this and it rules, i would recomend it and as stated it doesnt even have to be real expensive and it makes things so much easier. if you dont do it though i would just even give the small tip of turning off the internet and esp your airport card when you are going to record, i always restart and turn off all the functions im not going to use.

Yeah, good call, I sometimes recorded some distortion / interference from my network card when my internet cable is plugged in whilst recording. Easy to solve, easy to forget too. Thankfully unplugging does the job and a fresh reboot also helps a lot indeed.
