ye olde MC505

hey y'all.
i just glaumed an MC505 from a friend, got it last night. there seems to be a lot of good sounds in there (i liked the organs and basses i heard). looking forward to messing around with it.

i know a couple of you also have an MC505, thot i'd see how you are using it. midi btwn MC505 and sp? writing parts on 505, passin' them over to sampler?

also - i'm concerned about snare sounds on the 505. have any of you discovered good snares on there? haven't had a chance to dig thru them all, but am hoping there are some in there.

just looking for tips, and (of course) a bit of backup on this being a good addition to the studio.

i used to have a 505 up until recently, I sold it cos I wasn't really using it so much as I coulda

It's actually a great synth, if you don't like the snares, you can mess around with the sounds using the filters etc. The non-drum preset sounds are really good tho, they shud come in useful, I pretty much only ever used the thing as a sound module

Paulj is spot on: you have to delve into the 505 to get the most from it. Once you've constructed you own sounds you will never touch the presets again!!

The synth is basically a jv1080, so a four-layer PCM 'VA'. Not the greatest but certainly a very good source of 'bread and butter' sounds.

I tend to use the two together, linked up, with the 606 as the master. This is necessary because the 606 can't gradually change tempo like the 505 can, so you have to let the 606 do the timing or it all goes pear-shaped.

You can run the audio from the 505 through the 606 as well (at the same time - it doesn't use any of the 606s precious polyphony) and apply effects on the fly - it's awesome for live playing.

You can use EXT SEQ SAMPLING to capture sequences from the 505 (or any other midi sequencer) perfectly; this is a feature that only the 606 has I think, and it can be quite useful; although I tend to capture computer sequences rather than from the 505 (After all, why not just play em off the groovebox?)

The 505 is anothe slept-on machine - grab one before people realise!

hmm. very cool. food for thought. thanks for the replies.

as it turns out, on the drum presets once i started messing around with octave plus / minus i found all the 'buried' snares, so that issue is going to be resolved. plus running some resonance over stuff really shapes fings differently.

i am going to mess around with the sounds to tweak them toward what i need, for sure.

i have a qwick question on that: can you create / save your own drum kits and synth patches (so, like faunadrums-one) and have 'em at the ready? so like, a kick from "house-1" and a snare from "d-bass" or whatever, saved to my own kit? same with synths - can i tweak & save a lead sound as my own? i don't want to have to tweak these each and every time, if you follow...would like to get them all set up and then get creating!

i know its a basic question, and i DO have the 4billion page manual which i'm working thru, but thot i'd ask.

You CAN do that, but damned if i remember how lol ask 606 Man he seems to know his stuff. U definitely can though because I did it on mine.

yep no problem; simply save to a 'user' bank. You can even save to a memory card, if you can find one of the ancient ones the 505 uses.

one rime i saw my mc505 trip out super rank , there was this shit dancing all crazy like all my knobs are boken so now i gotta fuck wit dem with keyshift and waveshaper , if your hard core enough to make it sound like atb303 ,or mc 808 matrix. or whatever. my favorite presets are the gangster shit, and try this.

go thru all the crappy tecno songs slow em down whatever
run some keyshift on that shit it will give you an idea of the low boost.

i sold my mc-505 but i remember the fun funtion (megamix) ....you can mix on the fly tracks 4 diferents sequences....great!!

i've had a lot of fun w/ the 505. i guess that all-in-one box has advantages and disadvantages, but it leans way more to the positive for me and my creation. you can pro'lly pick one up used, doctor.

i feel like the mc-808 is under-rated. vivi, how would you rate your 808 on a 1-10 scale? how far down the list is it of gear you couldn't live without?

you dont see in my live show videos in youtube...because i buy it recently, i sold my MC-909 and buy one MC-808, because i need more memory space.

MC-909 have 265mb internal ram max and old smartmedia 128mb max external. (dont have anymore in stores)...here in argentina i found it at usd200...one of 128mb)

MC-808 have 512mb internal ram max and compactflash 1gb max external and is more portable than MC-909 (for me).

i use all the same futures in both....obviusly the big LCD in MC-909 is great....but i dont miss it.
Really luuuv the news in my 808, the sound are totally new and more useful, the editor is more intuitive...the sampler is the same...great!
i know the people say MC-909 is better....not 4 me.
MC-909 is a clasic in the MC-family....and come others in the future...like in the SP-family...
