you're signature is really funny. i'm pretty sure he did use a sp. but for real dilla could make two coke bottles and a straw sound dope if he had wanted.

Ah k. Id be interested to know which beats he did use the sp for. All a mystery tho i suppose, as you said he could make beats outta 2 coke bottles n a straw lol. All goes to show its not always your gear that counts but your talent.

Haha I got my signature from an Australian HipHop group called the Funkoars :D

I read that he made all but 2 tracks on "Donuts" on a 303, but it sounds so much more "hi-fi" than most stuff you hear getting produced on sp's, I kinda like the idea that he did though- sittin on his death bed making this great album on a 303, i like the myth, i like the mystery! I don't really want to know for sure.

i read about madlib trackin back each pad in the studio to give it better sound overall. this makes sense, if i could have studio time i'd use it. we could really just do that on our pc's anymore. you could record it all in time on channels seperately with midi-syncing, couldn't you?

I'm planning on doing this with a beat I made on my 404... Don't think it's gonna be too hard........

Hahaha, same here. I definitely need to get me soon MIDI cables soon though, as my MicroKorg, Korg Kaoss Pad3 and SP-606 all support MIDI and so on. There might be some untapped power in combining the three.

dilla used an mpc 3000 for most of the shit he did..

on donuts he used the sp 303 and a powerbook (or macbook) with pro tools

" "They brought him a little Boss [SP] 303 sampler and little 45 record player," says his close friend and fellow producer Karriem Riggins. "That's what brought him through to make a lot of music that we hear on Donuts."

In fact, Dilla completed 29 of the 31 songs on the aforementioned Donuts instrumental LP, his latest masterful release, while still in the hospital. "

he did use various boxes. in the mag WAXPOETICS he mentioned that that kprg sampler was one of the last ones he purchased and it woas the only one he had to whip the manual out for, lol. he say the mpc 3000 had everything he ever needed for a majority of his beats. but he kept them doors open!.

on 2nd note i actually tried midi clock with PT and my 606. it works great once its set up. it takes a lil practice tho timing wise depending on how u laid things out... meaning 4 bar loop or 16. its pretty sweet tho. only thing is(might be a shytty cable) but it hums up until i hit record?? anybody know why>

in a old interview Dilla mentioned the Korg Electribe ESX, never heard anything about dilla using SP's. Madlib did use a SP-303 and a SP-606 for most of his Madvilain stuff though.
Quote:
"Scratch mag: Are there certain pieces of gear that you feel more comfortable around, that you tend to use alot?
Madlib: Just these little box machines, like the Roland SP-606 and the Boss SP 303. I like the 606, 'cause it has a gang of effects on it. I like an MPC too, but these are so easy to just turn on and use. The only thing i did on the MPC is the De La Soul (shopping bags)"
