Wobbly control knob on my 202

Post by Transmisser »

I just purchased an SP-202 from Japan. Overall condition is really good, but I'm still running it through it's paces before I can confirm it's fully functional.

The biggest thing I've noticed is that the control knob is super flimsy / wobbly - not sturdy feeling at all. It works like it should and there's no noise when rotating it. Still, I'm going to need to be mindful of not being too aggressive with it. Are the knobs easy to pull off? If it's a matter of the plastic leg underneath the knob being cracked I might just take it off and superglue the break.

I'm considering bring it to my tech to replace it though, but I'm probably going to source the part myself so he doesn't need to. Does the following ebay listing look like the right potentiometer for the 202?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Roland-Boss-SP ... :rk:6:pf:0

Thanks

i have two 202s. on one the control knob is wobbly/flimsy too but works for years this way  i once opened it up to see if something is broken, but it was just the long plastic shaft of the knob which is a bit wobbly, the solder joints etc. all looked good so i didn't replaced it.

i think the ebay link is the wrong knob (the one you linked is VOLUME), but the same seller has the right one. you need the CONTROL potentiometer. i already have both those parts at home just in case... but as far as i remember theres a slight difference between volume and control knobs. look at the sp202 service manual to be clear..

hope this helps a bit, peace.

Thanks for chiming in, that's good to know. I'm going to snag a few of those pots just as a backup plan. Thanks for pointing out that I had the wrong pot, I didn't catch that initially!

glad it helped :-)

yeah, why not get both of those knobs now (when they're available) just in case you need them sometimes. that was exactly my thought...

but luckily that wobbly/flimsy knob still works like a charm - even if it always feels like "next time i touch it it'll break"
