I've just been noticing that mine often double fires if i'm not pressing it directly in center... Wondering if it's defective or if it's meant to be like that.

It's a glitch that can be used as a feature. Seriously though, this mainly happens when you hit the pads out of center in a certain way. With a little bit of practice you can easily avoid this or use to your advantage. 8)

hmmm... mine doesnt do that... but maybe ive trained myself. My MPC2k used to do that all the time and I learned how to hit the pads so it wouldnt double.

I always used the pads at their highest sensitivity... perhaps that 'helps' to get this glitch? It's mainly a matter of technique too, because if you strike a pad and also take your finger away again, it can't happen. If you press and hold for a split second it can definitely happen if you miss the center of the pad....

Basically it did not happen very often by accident on my SP-555 by the way.

it doesn't happen frequently to me either... and i noticed that if you put your finger on the corner of the pad and do rapid pulses without removing your finger you can achieve machine gun like sounds.. pretty cool.

i was just wondering if it was normal or not... it happens when you sorta "roll" your finger as it strikes the pad...
