WTF

Post by drmnaga78 »

Had some drama a month or so ago when a zip fucked up and i lost loads of work!! New disc in now(750mb), have been building some beats on it, put disc in today and none of the pads are illuminating where samples should be and the songs aren't playing any sound although I can see the phrases on the tracks, no weird drive clicking going on. Anyone else ever had a disc fuck up this way?

ps. I do think that the 750mb drives and discs are less reliable than the 100s

Yeah, same happened to me with both the 100mb and 250mb drives (which is why I replaced the 100mb to begin with.) Except my whole 808 would just freeze up, pads wouldn't illuminate and none of the buttons worked until I did a hard reset. Had to chuck a few brand new 250mb disks because of that too.

Hi Fluent,

What do you mean a hard reset?

Cheers,

My bad, I just meant turning the machine off and then back on. That was the only way to get it to unfreeze. And then the disks after that were bad and had to be replaced.

Once i had almost the same thing, there wasn't any presage of it on the previous day, next time when i turned it on, all my pad banks just disappeared, but the projects (tracks) remained. Unfortunately idk what caused it. :(
I use zip100 and at the time there was the original OS on it.

Have you tried using the Zip750 disk in a computer?
I've never had a 750 disk or drive go bad on me.

Another new disc with a few projects just fucked up!! I reckon it must be my drive corrupting my discs, only ever had one disc fuck up when I had the original 100mb drive in and that was when the drive died.

I think ur right about the cause homie. It makes sense that the drive is corrupting the discs. I had similar issues a few months ago. I got a new 250MB Zip drive and the problems went away. Not only that, but I’ve been able to reformat the same discs that were glitching on the old drive & the discs work fine now. Even after reloading backed-up versions of the discs that were getting glitchy, from the computer to the reformatted zip... if that makes sense. And the drive that went bad definitely worked great for a long time before it went shitty. Happened quick but the first sign was glitchy playback & recording.

Zip drives are getting harder to find! Managed to find one un-used one (although it was made in 2002) on ebay and it is 3x more expensive than the one I bought a couple of years ago!
Pretty cool you were able to recover your discs Baz.

This.

You lot are brave, hehe..

I really loved these samplers initially when they were originally released but I had so many problems with the two SP-808's I've owned that it's put me off for life...I still have a non working model but I seriously doubt I'll be attempting to get it fixed up anytime soon, alas.
