TR-8 & SP-404SX or SP-404A - - Tips & Tricks

I use the two machines together, and there are some things that aren't mentioned on the Roland site, which are quite cool.

1st. When you assign the TR-8 to trigger a sample, the volume fader on that channel will control the volume of the sample. This isn't mentioned, and is very useful, for fading in different parts. Now you have individual volume faders for each sample.

2nd. Each of the 16 drum kits on the TR-8 will keep the sample & pad information that are assigned to it. Very useful for doing a live pa set... to keep things organized, I usually make pattern 1 using kit 1, and kit 1 will trigger samples on Bank A... PT2 KT2 Band B... etc.. etc..

3rd, when you use the scatter function on the TR-8, the TR-8 will trigger the samples on the SP-404sx the same way it does for the drum sounds, for creating fills etc...

4th... if you have long drone samples, and you want them to play only for a certain amount of bars, set the sample to "loop", the 1st step will start the sample, the 2nd step will stop it.

5th... You can use the side-chain function of the TR-8 to duck the sound of the SP-404sx, if you feed the output of the SP-404sx into the TR-8. This is great if your using the SP-404sx to playback drones.

6th... or you can feed the TR-8 into the SP-404sx, crank the volume of the TR-8, the sound will clip, adjust the level of the EXT down to 80-100 and you instantly have that crunchy-overdriven 90's ware-house techno sound, but the sound won't drowned out the sound of the samples.
